Dear Cryolist members,
Technical University of Denmark, Department of Civil Engineering is inviting applications for a 3-year PhD position starting October 2020. This position is offered in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The title of the project is: Anticipating future stability of arctic key infrastructure through combination of geophysical mapping and permafrost thermo-mechanical modeling.
Application deadline is July 30, 2020.
The project will focus on (i) developing quantitative geophysical subsurface characterization methods for warming and thawing soils, and (ii) benchmark mechanical models for the consequences of soil thawing in an infrastructure setting. This will be achieved through (i) developing joint inversion of multi-geophysical data sets, (ii) laboratory calibration of geophysical and mechanical properties linked to variation in soil temperature and salinity, and (iii) implementing this information in current mechanical and thermal modelling tools used to model performance of infrastructure adaptation design strategies. Field application of the developed tools will be focused on community infrastructure in Greenland.
More information about the project and instructions for submitting an online application are available at: https://www.dtu.dk/english/about/job-and-career/vacant-positions/job?id=0d30b7df-1dae-438a-a23c-2636d860a7de
