[CRYOLIST] Slideshows on YouTube by TangoGlaciar

Dear Cryolisters,

TangoGlaciar is presumably the only tango 'orchestra'  that consists solely of glaciologists (namely, Felix Keller and me….).
We planned to play at the Karthaus 2020 summer school, but this won't happen since the course had to be cancelled.
Instead we prepared a few YouTube slideshows with our music, which you may enjoy.

With best regards,
Hans Oerlemans

[CRYOLIST] Postdoc position at UC Berkeley

Hello All,

Please see below for details on a Postdoc Position with Dr. Fernando Pérez in the Department of Statistics at UC Berkeley.

All the best,
Lindsey

----------

Postdoctoral Researcher: Data Science, Earth Science with a Cryosphere emphasis and Open Source Software

Supervisor: Dr. Fernando Pérez, UC Berkeley Department of Statistics.

Job Description:

I am looking for a post-doctoral researcher interested in the intersection of geoscience (with a particular emphasis on cryosphere science and glaciology), data science, and open source computational tools to join our group in the Department of Statistics at UC Berkeley. You would be joining a multi-disciplinary team of researchers with backgrounds in statistics and geoscience as well as folks leading open-source projects in the Jupyter community. To give you a flavor of a few projects that we have on the go:

  • Jupyter meets the earth: we are using research avenues in climate science, hydrology, geophysics and cryosphere science to motivate technical developments within the Jupyter ecosystem. We are aiming to strengthen the cryosphere science uses of these tools, including a partnership with the team at the University of Washington that leads the development of the IceSat-2 HackWeeks. We aim to jointly contribute to the cryosphere science community by providing better tools for large-scale data-driven research in an interdisciplinary setting, and to inform the evolution of Jupyter thanks to these concrete use cases in scientific research, education and collaboration.

  • Glaciology / cryosphere science: This is a current focus of several of the graduate students working with me and is an area I am very interested in making contributions to. In addition to the above, we are connected with collaborators at the University of Washington on a project to develop software for working with ICESat2 data (icepyx). We are also initiating collaborations with colleagues at the School of Mines to look at machine learning approaches for estimating surface-water volumes through time on Greenland and Antarctica. We would welcome contributions to these projects as well as new ideas or other avenues of research in the cryosciences.

  • Physics & Machine Learning: I am interested in questions that are at the intersection of physically-driven models and statistical learning. This is a general theme throughout the projects we are pursuing, and I would welcome the opportunity to work with someone who is interested in this intersection, especially as these ideas are expressed in geoscience applications.

An ideal candidate would

  • Have a PhD in a field such as (Geo)Physics, Earth and Planetary Science, Statistics, Data Science or related.

  • Have experience and interest in mentoring PhD students in the group.

  • Have demonstrated leadership in collaborative projects.

  • Be self-directed on broadly-scoped projects.

  • Be proficient in Python or R and tools in the open-source data science ecosystem.

  • Be willing to contribute to grant proposal writing.

Location-wise it is preferable if the candidate can work locally at Berkeley, but I am open to considering remote options, especially at the start (and given the coronavirus uncertainty, that may even be required at least for a while).

If you are interested, please provide:

  • A Curriculum Vitæ

  • And a short (1-2 page) statement describing your research interests and how you envision contributing to the projects described above

By email to Fernando Pérez and Lindsey Heagy (fernando.perez@berkeley.edu, lheagy@berkeley.edu).

[CRYOLIST] Post-doc opportunity - coupled climate icesheet modelling

Dear Cryolist,

We are advertising a fixed-term postdoctoral research position using our state-of-the-art coupled climate--ice sheet modelling capabilities, including the new UKESM. The idea of the project is to constrain key variables in such models by combining simulations and real world evidence from different periods of ice sheet behaviour, past and present, within an emulation framework.

For further details about the post, please see the following link:

https://jobs.reading.ac.uk/displayjob.aspx?jobid=6651

The project is based within NCAS at the University of Reading, UK, with co-supervisors at Leeds and Bristol Universities, and King's College London.

The deadline for applications is 30th June 2020. Informal enquiries to robin.smith@ncas.ac.uk are very welcome.

best wishes,

Robin Smith

[CRYOLIST] Peer-reivew Journal Advances in Polar Science — Spare space available for publishing a special issue in 2021

Peer-reivew Journal  Advances in Polar Science — Spare space available for publishing a special issue in 2021

Dear all,

I am Xiaoliang Ling, an assistant editor of Advances in Polar Science (APS), I'm so pleased to introduce APS to you.

As you know, APS publishes annually one or two Special Issues on specific polar research themes. In 2021, there are spare spaces for publishing a special issue.

An entire issue of the journal may be devoted to publishing the proceedings of an Antarctic or Arctic meeting, the special research theme for an Antarctic or Arctic cruises, or the research outcome of a polar scientific program.

In the near future, we hope APS could attract more manuscripts from Polar Early Career Scientists. No cost of publication on APS will be required, owing to the generous funding from the Polar Research Institute of China.

APS is an international, open-access journal jointly sponsored by the Polar Research Institute of China and the Chinese Society for Oceanography, published quarterly by China Science Press, for the whole Antarctic and Arctic science community. Original papers are accepted from scientists of any nation, subject to peer review by at least two expert referees.

APS publishes Reviews, Articles, Letters, Trends, Opinion Editorial. Opinion Editorial can be a statement of the opinion of a named author or authors, with a maximum of 1500 words (a maximum length of 2 printed pages). It will provide a forum for comment on the status and/or deficiencies on any aspect of polar science, reflect on recent innovation or progress, promote internationally collaborative polar science projects, etc. It will be directly reviewed by EICs with final decision without peer review by expert referrers.

You can see detail on APS's website: www.aps-polar.org. We encourage you share this announcement with your colleagues.

Thank you for your interest and support in advance.

Best wishes,

Xiaoliang Ling, Assistant Editor
