[CRYOLIST] PhD position at University of Córdoba (Spain) funded and co-hosted by EURAC Research (Italy)ch (Italy)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I would appreciate if you could distribute the announcement for a PhD position.

PhD scholar in the synergy of hydrology and earth observation to monitor snowpack changes

The University of Córdoba (Spain) is offering a PhD scholarship, funded and co-hosted by EURAC Research (Italy) and titled: "Earth observation and hydrology in mountain areas in Mediterranean regions".

This PhD position and its work will be supervised by the research group Earth Observation for Environmental Monitoring of the EURAC's Institute for Earth Observation in cooperation with the research group Fluvial Dynamics and Hydrology of the University of Córdoba, and the candidate will be enrolled in the PhD Program Biogeochemical Fluxes and Applications.

The focus of the PhD will be to quantify the link between snow cover changes and water resources in mountain areas in the Mediterranean region, with special focus on sites where the snowpack' dynamics shows a highly variable spatial and temporal pattern. In this context the research will focus on two main activities:

  • Integration of new developed products into hydrological models for river discharge prediction in two mountain ranges European Alps and Sierra Nevada: The new developed Copernicus products in terms of snow cover extent, snow albedo, snow liquid water content, snow wetness will be ingested into hydrological models to improve the prediction of variable such as discharge. For the ingestion of data, machine learning approaches will be tested in two main mountain ranges, the European Alps and the Sierra Nevada (Spain), with significant snow presence and influence on the hydrological regime downstream but with strong differences in area and local altitudinal gradients. Sierra Nevada can be considered a snow island in the context of the European snow regions.
  • Quantify the changes in snow cover extent and water resources in the Mediterranean "snow islands"

Through the combination of ground observation, physically based model simulations, Earth Observation data, the trends in the main "snow islands" of the Mediterranean basins will be quantified and analyzed. We expect to understand what is happening in the snow islands with respect to climate change in the last 20-30 years and how this information can be used to picture the future of other mountains in the world.

Requirements:

-Degree on Engineering (Civil, Forestry, Agriculture, Environmental), Geosciences, Physics, in any of its equivalent degrees in EU countries.

-Master degree in any field related to Environmental/Hydrological/Forestry/Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Remote Sensing, GeoSciences

-English skills equivalent to B2 or higher

Evaluation criteria:

  • Highly motivated candidate (motivation letter mandatory)
  • Research-oriented profile
  • Programming skills (e.g. Python, R)
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)
  • Specific knowledge of Earth Observation methods and hydrology will be considered an added value
  • Expertise in field work and mountain hydrology is also valued

How to apply:

The interested candidate must submit his/her application through the virtual office of the University of Córdoba by 10 January, 2022, midnight (CEST),

https://sede.uco.es/GOnceOV/tramites/acceso.do?id=54

[CRYOLIST] PhD position in coupled atmosphere-ocean-ice sheet modelling at MPI-M

Dear Cryolist

we are searching for a PhD student to investigate the fate of the Greenland ice sheet in a changing climate using a comprehensive coupled model system.

Best regards

Marie Kapsch and Uwe Mikolajewicz

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary centre for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for

3 PhD positions.

The successful candidates will become a member of the International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM). Our school offers prime research facilities, advanced academic training in the Earth system sciences and modelling, a structured supervision programme and funded PhD positions (3 years).

For detailed information on these positions please visit: https://mpimet.mpg.de/en/science/imprs-esm/how-to-apply/potential-supervisors-/-topics

Please note topic 2:

Is the mass loss of the Greenland ice sheet reversible?

Due to increasing temperatures in the last decades, the Greenland ice sheet has lost a significant amount of mass. Recent studies have shown that with an ongoing warming, the Greenland ice sheet is likely to continue to lose mass and might reach a tipping point beyond which the ice sheet will not be able to regrow, even if atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations would be lowered to preindustrial values again. While this has been studied with simple models before, a new developed comprehensive atmosphere-ocean-ice sheet-vegetation-solid earth model will be used here, allowing for a more realistic description of feedbacks between the Greenland ice sheet and other compartments of the climate system, including the atmosphere, ocean and solid earth.

In this PhD project the stability of the Greenland ice sheet will be studied in the coupled climate-ice sheet-solid earth model MPI-ESM-mPISM-VILMA, developed by the ocean-physics group as part of the project PalMod. The student will perform model simulations under changing climate conditions and investigate if and when the Greenland ice sheet crosses a tipping point. The goal is to explore whether the Greenland ice sheet could potentially return to its present state if temperature trends would reverse or whether the ice sheet reaches a new stable state that differs from the present, hence, exhibits multiple steady states including hysteresis behavior. The work will contribute to a better understanding of the physical processes and feedbacks between the Greenland ice sheet and other compartments of the climate system.

[CRYOLIST] Northern science graduate student opportunities

Northern Science Graduate Student Opportunities

Hi everyone. The Northern Environmental Geoscience Laboratory (NEGL) is a research laboratory situated at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. NEGL conducts primarily Labrador-based research and has a variety of existing partnerships with organizations in the region.

We are currently advertising for funded master and doctoral positions for projects investigating permafrost distribution & permafrost geohazards, permafrost interactions with snow cover, and satellite-era changes in snow cover. All of these projects would be focused on the Labrador region of northeastern Canada and would involve fieldwork in remote regions/communities. Preference will be given to Northern and Indigenous applicants, and Canadian residents (funding related).

At the PhD level, we have several options possible but are most interested in a student interested in combining field work with modelling and/or remote sensing to help improve our ability to understand permafrost and permafrost-related geohazards in the Labrador region of northeastern Canada. This position would be funded to at least $25,500 per year and has plenty of existing data waiting for the right person to make use of it in their studies. This is opportunity is financially supported by ArcticNet, NSERC, the Nunatsiavut Government, the Weston Foundation and Queen's University.

At the MSc level, we have a wide array of potential openings but would ideally like to find a student who is interested in working on understanding snow cover across larger spatial scales in Labrador using satellite remote sensing, remotely piloted aircraft and ground temperature observations. This would help improve our ability to understand recent changes in snow cover and ground thermal implications for local habitat. This position would be funded to at least $22,000 per year and would require fieldwork in addition to remote sensing or modelling work. This opportunity is financially supported by ArcticNet and Queen's University.

For more information about these opportunities and others in our laboratory please see the following website:
https://www.labradorgeolab.ca/opportunities

You can also see a recent twitter thread advertising for students here:
