[CRYOLIST] EUCOP6 Call for abstracts: Session 14 Open session on rock glaciers

Dear Colleagues

We would like to draw your attention to our "Open session on rock glaciers" at the upcoming EUCOP6 taking place in Puigcerdà, Spain from 18th to 22nd of June 2023.

Abstract submission is open and will close on January 15th 2023. More details below and on the conference webpage: http://eucop2023.com/

We are very much looking forward to hearing about recent developments in the field of rock glacier study

Best

Cécile, Line and Yan

Session description:

Rock glaciers are characteristic landforms associated with mountainous periglacial landscapes and generated by gravity‐driven creep of (ice‐rich) frozen ground (permafrost). Their location, characteristics and evolution are controlled by a combination of environmental (e.g. internal structure, topography, lithology, debris loading) and climate‐dependent factors (e.g. thermal and hydrological regimes). Rock glaciers are highly relevant in various fields of research, such as geomorphology, hydrology, geohazards, paleo‐permafrost and climate impact studies. Despite their significance, their complex interactions with environmental variables and the impact of climate change on their evolution remain incompletely understood. In this open session, we welcome contributions from the entire rock glacier community reflecting the different focuses and ranging from observations to modelling, from geophysical to remote sensing methodologies, from site‐specific to regional studies in diverse geographic regions of the World. We would especially like to stimulate discussions about innovative methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches, aiming to improve the understanding of past and/or present processes and to assess future rock glacier evolution.

[CRYOLIST] CR1.2 Glaciers and Ice Caps under Climate Change @EGU

[CRYOLIST] Fully-funded PhD and Master's positions at Temple University

PhD position

We are seeking a PhD student to join our research group, starting in Summer or Fall 2023. The student will work on an NSF-funded project for establishing a method to derive the subglacial effective pressure from reflection-seismic data and map its spatial/temporal variability under West Antarctic ice streams. This is a collaborative project with a group at the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison, led by Dr. Luke Zoet, who will conduct lab experiments. The student will lead the Temple University contribution to apply the lab results to field data. The student will also work on improving the characterization of subglacial topography and ice-bed interface conditions using seismic waveform-inversion techniques.

An ideal candidate will have a Master's degree in geophysics or related field, experience in seismology (active or passive source) and be proficient in scientific computing using Python or Matlab. However, an outstanding candidate with an undergraduate degree in geoscience, physics or applied math will also be considered.

This PhD position will be fully funded for four academic years with combined RA through the NSF-funded project and TA support provided by the department. Information about our PhD program can be found here.

[CRYOLIST] New IACS Working Group on Glacier - Ice Sheet Delineation

Call for new IACS Working Groups (WG)

The International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS) seeks to establish a new Working Group (WG) on Glacier - Ice Sheet Delineation. This WG aim to bring together the glacier and ice sheet community to find common ground on defining the domains (ice sheet & glacier masks) best used in glacier and ice sheet change assessments and modeling.

The ice sheets and all glaciers in their periphery are typically dealt with separately in assessing and projecting mass changes. However, ice masks vary widely between studies, and there is an urgent need for clear separation of ice sheets and glaciers in Antarctica and Greenland to avoid double-counting, or omissions when estimates are combined in global assessments, such as in IPCC.

Please contact us if you are interested in actively participating in this Working Group. The first step will be the preparation of a proposal to IACS defining the WG´s explicit objectives, milestones and deliverables to be achieved during the WG´s 4 year duration (See examples here). We envision a first zoom meeting around January/February 2023 and an in-person kick-off meeting at the IUGG meeting in Berlin, 12-16 July, 2023.

[CRYOLIST] EGU23 Session CR2.12: Radar investigations of ice

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of our convening team, I would like to draw your attention to Session CR2.12 "Radar investigations of ice: advancements, applications, and synergies from and between Earth and Space" taking place at EGU 2023 on 23-28 April in Vienna Austria. The details of the session can be found here https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU23/session/47458

Please note that the abstract submission deadline is 13:00 CET (07:00 EST & 04:00 PST) on 10 January 2023.

Session description:

Radar sounding is a well-established means of studying glaciers and ice sheets on Earth as well as ice on Mars. In this coming decade, radar-carrying missions will also be launched to study the icy moons of Jupiter. Surface-based, airborne, and satellite radar measurements all provide unique insights into the surface, internal and subsurface processes of icy environments; distinguishing them from other types of surface and remote sensing investigations. This wide range of applicability has led to an increasing diversification and specialization of radar implementations and data analysis techniques. Often framed in terms of the specific fields of application, there is typically little opportunity to center the radar methods themselves as a means of seeking out parallels and synergies between disciplines.

The purpose of this session is to provide a common forum for showcasing the state-of-the-art in terms of how radar sounding techniques are being applied across the solar system. By bringing together all researchers interested in the use of radar to study ice, this session strives to facilitate discussions of on-going and future cross-fertilisation between disciplines. To this end, we welcome contributions from all relevant fields and areas of study, including terrestrial cryospheric science, geodesy, and planetary science. The broad-scale topics we hope to cover in this session include:

1) Recent advances in the acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of radar datasets both on Earth and across the solar system.
2) Advanced techniques that exploit radar data beyond sounding: altimetry, reflectometry, etc.
3) Synergies between terrestrial spaceborne and airborne radar sounding.
4) Lessons learned from Earth and applicability to other extra-terrestrial bodies.
5) Lessons learned from extra-terrestrial bodies and their applicability to Earth.
6) Electromagnetic modelling of radar wave propagation within the terrestrial or solar system ices.

We especially encourage the participation of Early Career researchers and those from underrepresented groups.
