Dear cryoslisters,
I would like to share with you a key event that occurred yesterday at COP27 concerning Cryosphere.
I thought that such info could be worth to share since it is a huge step towards putting Cryosphere on the final cover decision of the COP, which would be the first time that would happen. This would have great implications for the increase in observations capability in the Cryosphere as well as for the awareness of Cryosphere issues at the highest political level. So feel free to share.
Yesterday governments at COP27, led by the two polar and mountain nations of Chile and Iceland, joined together today to create a new high-level group, "'Ambition on Melting Ice' on Sea-level Rise and Mountain Water Resources."
The "AMI" group aims to ensure impacts of cryosphere loss are understood by political leaders and the public, and not only within mountain and polar regions, but throughout the planet. Its focus is to make clear the need for 1.5°C to be a true guardrail for humanity and ecosystems because of the cryosphere response seen already today, and because the latest IPCC science makes clear the cryosphere response will worsen with each increment of higher temperature.
In addition to Chile and Iceland, founding members of the AMI Group include, at time of writing, Monaco, Peru, Czech Republic, Nepal, Finland, Senegal, Kyrgyz Republic, Samoa, Norway, Georgia, Liberia, Switzerland, Tanzania, New Zealand, Sweden, and Vanuatu. Mexico as joined the coalition today.
