Dear colleagues,
The School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Liverpool, UK, invites applications from outstanding individuals actively researching in glaciology or related geoscience areas for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in Glaciology, starting January 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, for 30 months. Closing date 7th December 2022.
The PDRA will join a growing team of researchers in Glaciology within the department of Geography and Planning, School of Environmental Sciences, within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Liverpool.
The post will be one of two funded by the recently awarded NERC project “Ice-layer Permeability Control on Runoff from Ice Sheets (IPCRIS)” – PI Doug Mair, Co-Is James Lea and Isabel Nias. The aim of IPCRIS is to improve predictions of melt-water runoff from the Greenland Ice Sheet through quantification of near surface ice layer permeability.
The IPCRIS team will develop new insight into the refreezing capacity of the ice sheet, and therefore Greenland's past, present and potential future contribution to global sea level. Novel laboratory experiments undertaken by the team will be used to develop new parameterisations of ice layer permeability that will be integrated into existing physically-based models of refreezing and runoff.
You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline.
Any applicants who are still awaiting their PhD to be awarded should be aware that if successful, they will be appointed at grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that they have been successful in being awarded their PhD, they will be moved onto grade 7, spine point 37 from the date of their award.
For this role, we seek a post-doctoral researcher who will undertake pioneering cold-laboratory based simulations of Arctic snow/firn and ice layer response to melt and refreezing cycles.
