[CRYOLIST] Ice-Sheet Model Initialisation Workshop, Utrecht University, 28/29 March 2023

Dear Cryolist,

On Tuesday March 28th and Wednesday March 29th of 2023, we will host a two-day workshop on ice-sheet model initialisation at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. The workshop will be held in the historic Academy Building of Utrecht University, downtown Utrecht (at walking distance from the main train station), starting at around 09:00h in the morning of Tuesday March 28th, and ending with a nice dinner in the evening of Wednesday March 29th.

A significant part of the spread in projections of future ice-sheet retreat is attributed to uncertainties in their present state, and the way this state is represented in ice-sheet models. Modelling groups across the world tackle this initialisation problem utilising a variety of approaches, each with its own advantages and shortcomings. We will explore this topic from both a physical and a modelling perspective, and exchange insights about the practical implementation of different approaches in ice sheet models, enabling more comprehensive intercomparison exercises in the future.

The program for both days will consist of invited talks in the morning, covering topics such as general model initialisation, physical uncertainties in the ice-sheet system, inversion techniques, basal sliding, and basal melt. In the afternoon, there will be room for submitted presentations and posters, and a session dedicated to sharing model code related to different aspects of model initialisation.

There are no participation fees, but participants are expected to cover their own expenses. Due to venue considerations, the number of attendees will be limited to around 50, with a particular focus on early career researchers.

Participants can apply, with or without an abstract, through this Google form:

https://forms.gle/YA5ibWAnNCJASAzp9

Deadline for application: Friday February 24th 2023, 23:59h

Feel free to circulate this message also to anybody who might be interested. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us via c.j.berends@uu.nl or j.a.bernalesconcha@uu.nl .

We hope to see many of you there!

[CRYOLIST] Invitation to submit abstract for IUGG Berlin 2023 - IACS Symposium C06: “New Frontiers in Paleoclimate Reconstructions and Proxy Interpretations From Ice Cores”

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to submit an abstract to the IACS symposium:

C06: "New Frontiers in Paleoclimate Reconstructions and Proxy Interpretations From Ice Cores"

held at the 28th General Assembly of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) in Berlin from 11 to 20 July 2023

https://www.iugg2023berlin.org/

Session description: The most recent IPCC report highlighted remaining large uncertainties in the future evolution of the cryosphere with direct consequences for global sea level rise. Understanding past climate variability and sensitivity from glacial archives is thus fundamental for placing the current changes in a longer-term context. The international ice core community is currently putting an enormous effort towards retrieving the oldest (continuous) ice core from Antarctica. Progress continues to be made in the dating and interpretation of existing ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica. In addition, the ice cores retrieved in high-altitude/low-latitude glaciers are offering a wealth of paleoclimate information covering the last centuries and millennia. We invite contributions reporting new results from field, data and model studies related to ice cores drilled in both polar regions and mid-low latitude glaciers and covering temporal scales spanning from the last decades to glacial-interglacial cycles.

Convener(s): Ji-Woong Yang (France)

Co-convener(s): Mathieu Casado (France) Barbara Stenni (Italy) Christo Buizert (USA)

Abstract Submission at: https://www.iugg2023berlin.org/abstract-submission/

Abstract submission deadline: 14 February 2023.

Travel Grant Application: https://www.iugg2023berlin.org/travel-grant/

Applications for the IUGG 2023 Travel Grants Program close on 14 February 2023.

Please, circulate this info with your colleagues.

[CRYOLIST] Cryolist Code of Conduct and Guidelines

    Hi Cryolist,

I hope everyone who attended AGU had safe travels and a productive week!

I typically try to stay out of the way on the list but as the list continues to grow and Todd has fully stepped away from Cryolist I thought it best that I fully introduce myself.

I'm Dr. Christopher Marsh, a Canadian cold regions snow hydrologist working in mountain regions, the Canadian prairies and the Canadian Arctic. I've been a CRYOLIST moderator since 2010 and list admin since 2012. Todd and I have co-run the list for years and I fully took over from Todd in 2020 [0]. Todd has completely stepped away as of this year [1]. I personally pay out of pocket for Cryolist to avoid any perceived (or otherwise) institutional bias or agenda.

I am also delighted to introduce the moderators who help keep your inboxes free of spam:

Dr. Caroline Aubry-Wake, Utrecht University, Netherlands (she/her)
Dr. Phillip Harder, University of Saskatchewan, Canada (he/him)
Dr. Vincent Vionnet, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Canada (he/him)
Dr. Michael Matiu, University of Trento, Italy (he/him)

As the list continues to grow and the reach expands, ensuring there are clear expectations for list users, user-content, and how that is managed is increasingly important.
These guidelines have been in our heads for years. However, with more moderation volunteers there is a clear need to codify these expectations as well as provide full transparency on how the list is run.

Cryolist is a community resource and is only as valuable as the community perceives it. I want everyone to feel welcome and heard. I want this to continue to be the best place for communication of everything snow and ice.

Suggestions, feedback, and criticism are always welcome (email cryolist-owner@lists.cryolist.org). I expect that the Code of Conduct and Posting Guidelines is an evolving document based on what works, what isn't working, and the community's feedback.

The full Code of Conduct and Guidelines are available here https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zoQ6rUifcekt6sAZAV9GHrGSsphZO4WoQDZQjDi30k8/edit?usp=sharing and I would encourage all members to read it.

I have updated the list details at cryolist.org to have an abridged version. In short:

    • Be excellent to each other. Be civil and considerate. Assume good faith. Science is complicated and communication via email can remove nuance and tone.
    • CRYOLIST aims to be a welcoming place for the diverse set of people, opinions, and values that exist in the cryospheric sciences.
    • CRYOLIST is an email mailing list and is not an appropriate place for long discussions.
    • Do NOT include attachments – these are scrubbed from digest messages and users have to dig through the archives to find them. Instead, copy and paste text into the message itself.
    • Email subject lines should be clear and descriptive. "PhD position available at My University (Country)" is far better than "Please post this to CRYOLIST".
    • Those seeking opportunities are encouraged to search the archives for previous announcements and join the LinkedIn Cryolist group[2]. Direct solicitation of positions on the list by posting CVs is not allowed.
    • Moderation decisions are not that of an individual but that of the moderation committee. Moderation is subjective and a "best effort" is used to ensure as many posts reach the list as possible, while filtering out obvious spam, low-effort posts, or posts that contradict the code of conduct or guidelines.

It is always appropriate, at any time, to contact the moderation team at cryolist-owner@lists.cryolist.org if there are concerns with postings.

I hope everyone has a happy holidays, happy new year, and safe travels wherever that may take you,

    Cheers
    Chris

[CRYOLIST] Invitation to AGORA workshop at the ASSW23. Funding available for ECRs!

    Dear Cryolist members,

I would like draw your attention to the AGORA initiative workshop during the upcoming ASSW 2023 in Vienna:

"The AGORA initiative (A collaborative Arctic research community assessment of interactions between global change drivers, societies and subsystems through space and time) represents a common ground to bring together Arctic scientists, indigenous researchers, and community stakeholders as a collective to discuss the core problems faced by the Arctic in the 21st Century. This workshop will focus on how these issues may be better understood by providing a firm historical context that extends beyond our currently limited instrumental monitoring. We aim to assess the impacts of main factors associated with global change (e.g., climate, ice thaw, environmental pollution and wildlife abundance and diversity) on the Arctic and its human inhabitants using Panarctic lake sediment core records and indigenous knowledge extending back ~1000 years. Looking at the past provides the opportunity to document the complex relationships between climate, ecosystems and human societies, providing a deeper understanding of how they will respond to future changes."

The call for participants is copy-pasted at the end of this message.

Please share this information with anyone you think may be interested. For more information, please contact Sergi Pla-Rabés (sergiplarabes[at]gmail.com) and Clay Prater (prater.clay[at]gmail.com).

The workshop is scheduled for 20th of February and the format of the meeting is hybrid.

Travel funding is available for early career researchers (application deadline is 28th of December):

    https://iasc.info/news/iasc-news/1080-agora-ecr-call-deadline-for-application-extended-to-28-december

On behalf of the AGORA Initiative,

    Mariana Verdonen

    Early Stage Researcher

    University of Eastern Finland

Department of Geographical and Historical Studies

"Call to participate in the Agora Workshop during the ASSW23.

    Dear all,

We are writing to you because we are organising the AGORA workshop (an IASC crosscutting funded initiative) at the upcoming ASSW23 in Vienna and value your participation in our event. AGORA means "community meeting place", and our goal is to bring together researchers from all IASC working groups, Arctic stakeholders, and indigenous peoples to establish synergies for studying critical questions about the current Arctic emergency. Our approach is to start by looking to the past by combining historical approaches (i.e., traditional knowledge, archaeology, long-term monitoring records and paleo-sciences) to help document and understand the complex relationships between climate, ecosystems, and human societies throughout the Arctic. Then, with your help, we would like to discuss how best to use this knowledge to help frame current environmental and social changes in the context of the recent past (100-1000 years) and develop interdisciplinary efforts to help predict future change.

The workshop structure will begin with a short overview of the initiative, followed by a round of introductions to help break the ice. Then, we will invite indigenous representatives, IASC working group representatives (especially ECRs) and ASWW23 attendees to discuss the use of indigenous knowledge/methods, monitoring data, and historical research approaches in Arctic science. Before the coffee break, we will discuss potential research foci/interests of individual groups and outline interdisciplinary topics across groups (e.g., arctic fires, fisheries, tourism, permafrost dynamics, water & atmospheric pollution, health, biodiversity & biogeochemistry, geological risks, resources availability…)

As this is a community-led initiative, what happens next is up to you! In general, we would like to have an open discussion of the use of indigenous and historical perspectives for improving our understanding of current and future environmental and social change. So please, send us your ideas for critical topics/themes to be addressed by one or more working groups and your ideas for activities within the workshop. We have room for the day, so let's see what we can accomplish together!

We currently have a call out for travel grants (now extended until the 28th of December) for ECR's to attend the full ASSW, including our workshop and the AWG and S&HWG meetings (to go along with candidates already selected from the CWG and TWG) and for indigenous representatives/scientists to attend our meeting and any other meetings of interest over the ASSW. As nearly our entire budget is going to support these groups, we are razor thin, so if you can, please consider donating additional funds if you are able, which will go directly towards offsetting the costs of our guests.

Please share this call with anyone you think may be interested in joining our effort. To start the ball rolling, we are planning an early January meeting. Until then, please send your ideas, questions, and feedback to sergiplarabe[at]gmail.com and prater.clay[at]gmail.com, and we will do our best to incorporate your suggestions into our program. Finally, if you are interested in the January online meeting, we will send you a doodle to select the best time for all of us.

    Sincerely,

    The AGORA Initiative"

[CRYOLIST] PhD on the future of the Greenland ice sheet at NCAS, Reading (UK)

PhD: Investigating the climate feedbacks that will determine the fate
    of the Greenland ice sheet

Sea level change is one of the most widely recognised and potentially
serious consequences of climate change. The contribution of ice mass
loss is a significant but currently uncertain component of predicted
    future sea level.

To address these uncertainties, this project will employ cutting-edge
numerical models of global climate and focus in on the climate-ice
interactions over Greenland. In parallel, observational data will be
used to both verify the model's capabilities and improve its physical
    parameterisations.

[CRYOLIST] PhD-position on sea ice mechanics and offshore wind in Aalto University

Aalto University Ice Mechanics group is looking for a doctoral student. Position is related to drifting sea ice interaction with offshore wind farms. Emphasis is on multi-scale numerical modeling: We will use numerical modeling to study how drifting sea ice affects an offshore wind farm and how the wind farm affects the sea ice surrounding it. Work will be performed by further developing and using existing discrete element codes. More information can be found from here:

[CRYOLIST] IUGG 2023 symposium "Atmosphere-Ocean-Sea Ice Interactions: Local Processes and Global Implications"

     Dear Colleagues,

We welcome abstracts to our symposium "M16 Atmosphere-Ocean-Sea Ice
Interactions: Local Processes and Global Implications"
(https://www.iugg2023berlin.org/919-2/) at the IUGG General Assembly 2023 in
    Berlin (https://www.iugg2023berlin.org/) from 11-20 July 2023.

Abstract deadline is 14 February 2023.

    Symposium description:
Changes in the Arctic and Antarctic climate system are strongly related to
atmosphere-ocean-ice (AOI) interactions and feedbacks between snow, ice, the
ocean, and atmosphere, such as snow processes, polynya formation, sea-ice
production and deep-water formation. AIO interactions can be triggered by
synoptic and mesoscale weather phenomena such as cold air outbreaks, katabatic
winds, and polar lows. In the Arctic, for example, sea ice loss is associated
with rapid regional warming which is often tightly linked to mid-latitude
weather and climate. Furthermore, in the Antarctic, sea ice change may affect
ice shelf behaviour and hence could affect sea level change. However, the
representation of these physical, chemical, and biogeochemical processes and
interactions at different spatial and temporal scales remains a major challenge
for current weather and climate models. This symposium brings together
researchers working in the areas of atmospheric and ocean boundary layers, sea
ice, and snow-cover processes as well as on global change related to the marine
Arctic and Antarctic. Further focus is on snow cover modelling, as well as snow
ablation and accumulation on sea ice. In addition, the session focuses on
processes and parametrizations related to physical and biogeochemical exchanges
and transports, including the influence of sub-mesoscale ocean dynamics, where
observational challenges can be addressed. Contributions dealing with
theoretical and observational studies, including remote sensing, as well as
studies using numerical models are welcome.

Please share with interested colleagues and hoping to see you in Berlin!

    Best regards,

    Dear Colleagues,

In alignment with the 2023 Federal Year of Open Science, the NSF Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) recently announced a new funding opportunity, the Geosciences Open Science Ecosystem (GEO OSE). The GEO OSE program seeks to support sustainable and networked open science activities to foster an ecosystem of inclusive access to data, physical collections, software, advanced computing, and other resources toward advancing research and education in the geosciences. The purpose of this support is to broadly enable geoscientists to leverage expanding information resources and computing capabilities to address interdisciplinary grand challenge research questions at the forefront of the geosciences. Please note, NSF's definition of "geoscience" includes ALL polar science, too!

Proposals to the GEO OSE program solicitation (NSF 23-534) are due March 16, 2023. Two tracks of support are available based on the size and scope of expected efforts. Track 1 will support smaller-scale activities to advance early stage GEO OSE activities, with funding provided for 2 years with a maximum budget size of $400,000 per project. Track 2 will support larger-scale activities, with funding provided for 3 years with budget size commensurate with the size and scope of the project up to about $1,600,000.

NSF will be holding an informational webinar (tentatively, Friday, January 20, 2023, at 1 PM EST) to offer guidance on the GEO OSE program and to provide an opportunity for Q&A. Please mark your calendars. We expect that registration details for the webinar will be provided in early January and posted on the GEO OSE program page.

    Best regards,

    Allen Pope
