[CRYOLIST] Climate Lab 2023

Dear climate science and climate engineering colleagues and friends

We would like to invite you to consider joining our transdisciplinary research project looking to explore how climate scientists and engineers “see” and “feel” climate change.

The project arises in part from a recent interview I did for a young school student from Japan. I agreed to participate as part of his homework on climate change… He asked me a series of science questions but his last question really spoke to me in a visceral way – in fact it floored me momentarily. He asked me “how do you feel when you see changes in glaciers in the Arctic?”. No one has ever asked me how I feel about climate change before, but it seems to me that this may be the most important question now – how do scientists see and feel climate impacts through their current knowledge and modelled visions of the future? - because our emotions profoundly influence our capacity to be agents of change.

If this idea speaks to you, we would like to invite you to consider joining our project. We would need you to participate in three online workshops to explore these themes. The workshops will bring together climate scientists with artists to explore and express our “expert feelings” about climate change. The workshops will be on either 4th May and 7th June or 28th September and 26th October 2023. In either case you need to be able to attend both events of the pair. Final reveals of the art works will occur on 23rd November and 7th December 2023.

The workshops will be facilitated by Fern Smith from Emergence https://emergence-uk.org/ and co-attended by written, visual and performance artists and climate scientists such as yourself. We are hoping to explore questions such as: How do scientists respond to the data which they are expected to present in a detached and ‘objective’ manner?  Why don’t we ask climate scientists how they feel about their work?  What happens if we do?  How might their relationship with their own research change were feelings to be acknowledged/discussed?  How might art help us all begin to bridge the distance between facts, emotion, and action? We hope that the workshops will co-produce art, academic outputs and - most importantly - catalyse change,  as well as lead to further projects on these themes in the future.

If you are interested to join this project, please respond with a short email response to climatelabwales@gmail.com and we’ll send you further details!

All best wishes, Tavi Murray and the Climate Lab team

[CRYOLIST] environmental data access, processing and display facility profile survey

Dear Cryosphere scientist, - I am a part of efforts pursued by a startup company that developed and implemented a very responsive, versatile (in terms of data resources) and functional data access, processing and information rendering system, - Ecosophy.is.  The system interface is web driven and has a function editor where you can address variables in various Global (and Arctic) public domain datasets, as well as your own through use of de-Facto industry standards.

It is currently being [worked on] populated with public domain open data, - reanalysis, analysis, forecast on weather, ice and ocean.  Setups exists for high resolution regional model data,  near-real time data and  public domain in-situ data  It certainly opens up the possibility to combine different variables on atmosphere, ocean and sea ice, high resolution regional forecasts, processed georeferenced satellite images etc through use of standard function generators for downstream information products and advanced model data output statistics.  This part of the facility is at its core and the user has data processing and rendering at the fingertip for end-user application eg. actionable information and insights that can be derived.

The system supports combination of any space time data ingested through an intuitive interface for display and viewing in conjunction with other public and open climate data. This interface is linked up to ingests for flexible formats and process statistics on it.  This interface also supports optional direct use of open software systems  (Python, R, among more) functions interface for advanced statistical processing and the native useful browsing functions support generic information rendering and time lapsing videos.    The data processing engine has very fast response and the user interface is particularly lightweight and functional for on-line use.

I myself as a polar scientist will engage in populating it with some mechanical data that is derived from a combination of diverse data.  The outcome is to produce synthetic thickness distribution from ice drift parameters, conditions along the drift trajectories from Polar view model data fields and experiment with their use in cooperation with the sea ice modeling groups.  Through this interface the system can be trained (AI/ML) to learn relationships between different data resources and bridge spatio-temporal gaps and exploit high resolution satellite backscatter textures in terms of geophysical parameters on ice morphology etc.

I wonder if you are willing to voluntarily participate in the survey, more on practicalities and functionalities than the science as such which is in the users court to resolve, given that the system is adequate, functional and easy to use.  BAsed on the survey support and design will be addressed and presented more thoroughly at a later stage.

The company is based out of Reykjavik Iceland. At Ecosophy,  they are first and foremost making it easier for people to work in a fast and intuitive way with large volumes of environmental data at nominal cost.   The company (Ecosophy.is) is conducting a survey to better understand how people currently access and work with environmental data, so we can make sure that the system is properly made to respond to your needs.

Use this link to access the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/R96NDFQ

Your participation in this survey is completely voluntary and anonymous. The survey should take 5 to 10 minutes to complete. Your feedback is very important to us, as it will help us develop better tools and resources to further unlock the potential of environmental data.

Thank you for taking the time to participate in this survey. We appreciate your input and look forward to hearing your thoughts. Survey closes on Friday 10 March 2023.

I hope that this activity interests you and justifying the intrusion that I allow me to make on this list that I am certain is a matter of interest to some if not many of you.

Thank you in advance, sincere regards Bjorn Erlingsson

[CRYOLIST] Extension of the abstract submission to the Limerick symposium - 15 March 2023

Dear Cryolist members

Just to inform you we have decided to extend the abstract submission deadline for the Limerick ‘Edges of Glaciology’ symposium until 23:59 GMT on Wednesday the 15th of March.

The reason being that coming in towards the deadline caused the server to stutter causing a disruption in the submission process. We have now shut down some processes on the server to free up some CPU time.

But more importantly, we have been contacted by people just returned from Antarctica and also some enroute back, that need more time to prepare their abstracts.

We have thus decided to give people until the middle of March to get their abstracts ready. Please submit at https://www.abstracts.igsoc.org/93a/

We have already received several interesting abstracts so this is heading towards to becoming a very interesting symposium.

If you encountered any problems you now have until Sunday night to complete your submission.

All the best

[CRYOLIST] Free online seminar

Good day Cryolisters!

The Mount Washington Observatory will be hosting our next free online lecture 7 March at 1900 EST.

Title: Winter Whiplash
Presenters: Alexandra Contosta, Ph.D, Research Assistant Professor, University of New Hampshire; John Campbell, Ph.D, Research Ecologist, US Forest Service
Abstract: "Winter whiplash" is a term used to describe extreme swings in winter weather conditions, often with large sub-to-above freezing temperature shifts. Researchers using data at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in White Mountain National Forest have examined a number of "whiplash events" and their impacts on human and natural systems. Understanding winter whiplash events can lead us to better approaches to potentially mitigating and adapting to our changing winter climate.

[CRYOLIST] New cs2eo.org features!

Hi All,

We recently updated the altimetry portal cs2eo.org with a host of new user-focused features. As well as the existing functionality for finding and downloading coincident data across ESA CryoSat-2, ESA CryoVEx, NASA ICESat-2, and NASA IceBridge missions, you can now also:

  • Search by RGI (v6) and IMBIE polygons as well as user uploaded geojson files
  • View sentinel imagery coincident with altimetry query results
  • Enable lat/lon helper lines and display polar stereographic coordinates
  • Preview CryoVEx PIX results via gifs in the results tab
  • Access the new NASA IceBridge sea ice quick look dataset
  • Discover available datasets within a spatio-temporal window (beta feature at present)

A nice summary of key features with examples can also be found on the ESA EO-Gateway site:

https://earth.esa.int/eogateway/news/stunning-new-features-for-esa-and-nasa-altimetry-portal-cs2eo.org

If you have any questions or feedback don't hesitate to contact us via support@cs2eo.org.

Thanks,

Alex

https://myview.uea.ac.uk/webrecruitment/pages/vacancy.jsf?vacancyRef=RA2077

Applications are invited for the post of Researcher in Physical Oceanography to undertake research into ocean processes in the Amundsen Sea, Antarctica.  You will work with Professor Karen Heywood and Dr Rob Hall on the ERC-funded COMPASS project and the NSF-NERC-funded TARSAN project, a joint project between oceanographers and glaciologists to understand the behaviours of ice shelves, as part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC).

You will investigate the oceanographic drivers of the basal melting of the Thwaites, Dotson and Getz ice shelves in the southern Amundsen Sea. Depending on your research interests, your analyses might exploit any or all of the following unique and exciting data sets collected during COMPASS and TARSAN:

  • Surveys of hydrographic properties, current velocity and turbulent mixing obtained under Dotson ice shelf from Autosub Long Range.
  • Ocean glider and ship-based hydrographic surveys across the Amundsen Sea and in front of Dotson and Getz ice shelves.
  • Moored time series beneath Thwaites ice shelf and in the Amundsen Sea.
  • Three years of seasonal hydrography from tagged seals in the Amundsen Sea.

You will collaborate with TARSAN and COMPASS colleagues in various US and UK institutions, and the University of Gothenburg. You will also collaborate with a biogeochemical counterpart to TARSAN, the ARTEMIS project. These international collaborations, together with the networking and early career scientist support provided by ITGC, offer an excellent opportunity to further develop your career. Although the data collection phases of TARSAN and COMPASS are now nearing completion, you will have the option to join UEA's ocean glider group and gain skills in operating and piloting the UEA Seaglider fleet.

You should have, or soon to be awarded, a PhD in physical oceanography (or equivalent independent research experience) and have led publications in scientific journals. You should have excellent communication skills and have presented results at conferences.

This full-time post is available from 1 May 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, for a fixed term period up to 32 months, must end 31 December 2025.

UEA offers a variety of flexible working options and although this role is advertised on a full-time basis, we encourage applications from individuals who would prefer a flexible working pattern including annualised hours, compressed working hours, part time, job share, term-time only and/or hybrid working. Details of preferred hours should be stated in the personal statement and will be discussed further at interview.

Benefits include:

  • 44 days annual leave inclusive of Bank Holidays and University Customary days (pro rata for part-time).
  • Family and Work-life balance policies including hybrid working and considerable maternity, paternity, shared parental leave and adoptionleave.
  • Generous pension scheme with life cover for dependents, plus incapacity cover.
  • Health and Wellbeing: discounted access to sportspark facilities, relaxation rooms, 320 acres of rolling parkland, wellbeing walks, medical centre, Occupational Health and a 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Campus Facilities: sportspark, library, nursery, supermarket, post office, bars and catering outlets.
  • Exclusive shopping discounts to help cut the cost of household bills, childcare salary sacrifice scheme, Cycle to Work scheme and public transport discounts.
  • Personal Development: unlimited access to LinkedIn Learning courses, specialist advice and training from our Organisational Development and Professional Learning Team.

Closing Date: Monday 3 April 2023
