[CRYOLIST] Abstract subission to Beijing symposium

Dear Cryolist members

Due to some confusion amongst students applying for travel grants and a misprint in our 2nd circular we are extending the abstract submission for the Beijing symposium until the 15th of April. Please do not delay your abstract submission long as we are getting a large number of submission for what promises to be a very interesting symposium.

A special word for the students applying for a grant. Please remember to ALSO  submit your abstract to the official abstract submission site. Unfortunately we cannot connect the two submissions so we apologise that you have to do it twice.

All the best

Magnús

[CRYOLIST] CLIVAR ECS Network

Welcome to the ECS Network
Clivar Icpo
@WCRP_CLIVAR
clivar.org
WCRP CLIVAR

CLIVAR Early Career Scientist network

CLIVAR (Variability and predictability of the ocean-atmosphere system) is one of the four core projects of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). CLIVAR's mission is to facilitate observation analysis and prediction of changes in the Earth's climate system, with a focus on ocean-atmosphere interactions, enabling better understanding of climate variability, predictability, and change, to the benefit of society and the environment in which we live.

CLIVAR is in the process of setting up an Early Career Scientist network. This is the first time such a large interdisciplinary project has established a network of early career research scientists. Therefore we all have a very unique opportunity to shape the way and define the future path that this network will take.

For a network like this to become successful in the long term we need to have a grassroots approach to its development. What is it that you want? How do you want the network to develop?

Ultimately we need you, your enthusiasm, skills, ideas and participation within the network.

To be eligible you must be within the first 5 years of your PhD.

If you have any comments, ideas or thoughts you would like to share with us it would be great to hear from you. Contact Jen at the International CLIVAR Project Office.

We at CLIVAR look forward to working with you and developing this network.
Are you going to EGU 2013?

CLIVAR will be hosting a Townhall meeting called 'Tomorrow's CLIVAR'. This town hall meeting will provide an opportunity to explore new directions for CLIVAR, with a focus on the role of the oceans in climate and on climate of the oceans. In particular CLIVAR is interested in the emerging needs of the early career scientist community. We would love to see you there!
Date: Monday 8th April
Time: 19:00 - 20:00
Location: Room B5

Download from here or pick up a hard copy of the EGU CLIVAR ECS Flyers and CLIVAR research opportunities brochure at the meeting!

Would you be interested in meeting up for an informal drink during EGU, to meet other early career scientists in the CLIVAR community?

If the answer is yes contact Jen (who will also be at EGU) to express your interest.

ECS Survey

We have put together a short (5 minute) survey asking what opportunities you would like to have within the CLIVAR ECS network. These are just a few ideas we have come up with and, you might find that they are not what you want, or you can think of something better. That is why we want you to participate in the survey.

Tell us what you want!

Once we have collated your responses we will be able to present the results to the CLIVAR scientific steering group and work, together with you, to further develop these ideas and initiatives.

A link to the survey can also be found on the CLIVAR ECS website pages.

Please can you complete the survey by Sunday 21st April 2013.

[CRYOLIST] CANQUA 2013 special session: Past and present ice sheet and glacier hydrology

A reminder to submit your abstract for the following CANQUA 2013 session (Deadline April 15)

The Canadian Quaternary Association (CANQUA) will be holding its
biennial meeting in Edmonton, Alberta, August 18-22, 2013.

The following CGRG-sponsored special session is planned for this conference:

Past and present ice sheet and glacier hydrology

Meltwater is an important component of glacier systems controlling their flow dynamics and stability, and impacting the pace of glacier decay. Yet the spatial and temporal variability of glacier plumbing systems and their necessary links to glacier dynamics and decay are not fully understood. This session welcomes papers relating to any aspect of glacier hydrology past or present. This may include, but is not restricted to, the reconstruction or modelling of: i) meltwater routing beneath glaciers and ice sheets; ii) meltwater storage and outburst floods; and iii) glacial lake (paleo)geography and evolution.

Please contact either Andrew Perkins (ajp7@sfu.ca) or Tracy Brennand (tabrenna@sfu.ca), session co-conveners, if you are interested in contributing to this session or would like further details. The abstract deadline is April 15, 2013. Further information about CANQUA 2013 may be found at the conference website http://www.eas.ualberta.ca/canqua/
Please feel free to distribute this to others who may be interested.

[CRYOLIST] New Zealand PhD scholarship, marine physics

A PhD scholarship that covers fees and living expenses is available at the University of Otago, New Zealand, to work on the parameterization of energy dissipation as ocean waves propagate through ice fields, and other mechanisms that affect the ice cover such as wave-induced melting and breakup. Wave energy is lost due to several factors, e.g. turbulence in the water on various scales, ice floe collisions and inelastic damping within the sea ice itself, while the latter processes trigger changes to the local floe size distribution and emergent sea ice continuum dynamics which then influence the fluxes that interconnect the ocean and the atmosphere.

The scholarship is part of a larger multinational programme (NZ, USA, Norway, Australia, Canada) to embed two-dimensional wave-ice interactions in a contemporary Arctic ice/ocean model – an important target that has already been demonstrated to be within reach by way of a complementary project in the Greenland Sea where one-dimensional interactions have been included already. While wave scattering in ice fields is understood satisfactorily, the attenuant phenomena referred to above have received less attention despite their significance being evident in field observational data.

Ocean waves are recognized as having become appreciably more important latterly because of the considerable changes that have occurred and continue to occur in the polar seas as a result of global climate change.

The project will be supervised by Professor Vernon Squire and Dr Fabien Montiel, both of whom have extensive experience of how waves are affected by floating ice and vice versa. Interested students, with a solid background in physics, physical oceanography or applied mathematics, should email the PI at vernon.squire@otago.ac.nz . Those interested are also referred to the web site http://www.maths.otago.ac.nz/~vsquire .

[CRYOLIST] GEOSummit Meeting, 3 May 2013, Vancouver, BC.

Dear Colleagues--

As part of the Arctic Observing Summit 2013
(http://www.arcticchange.org/arctic-observing-summit-2013/), the
Greenland Summit's Science Coordination Office invites you to take part
in the XXth GEOSummit meeting, to be held as a "Side meeting" on Friday,
3 May, in Vancouver, BC. It is our sincere hope that many of you will
already be in Vancouver for the AOS, and will be able to take an extra
day to discuss current research and future directions for Summit.

To begin the GEOSummit meeting, we are planning to showcase recent
science highlights, and are asking all of you to help (even, or maybe
especially, those of you who will not be able to attend). We also want
to include new projects that will be starting at Summit this summer as
well as currently pending proposals.

Could you please provide us with one or two power point slides that
shine the brightest possible light on your recent, current, or pending
project at Summit. We will do our best to organize all contributions I
receive into themes, and will present this overview. Obviously, if you
are in attendance you will be able to amplify (or correct) our comments,
but we do really want to hear from as much of the community as possible.

For new starts and recently proposed work, it would be great to see the
hypotheses you are hoping to test, and the approaches you are planning
to use.

If you are part of a large coordinated effort (NOAA, LTO, ICECAPS)
please discuss amongst your group whether you prefer to have an
organized overview summary, or want to encourage all PI's to submit
their own gems. If you decide to band together, please indicate that it
is an overview when you transmit to us.

Please send all materials to Jack Dibb <jack.dibb@unh.edu>.

Thanks in advance,

GEOSummit Science Coordination Office (sco@summitcamp.org):
Bob Hawley, Dartmouth College
Jack Dibb, UNH
Zoe Courville, CRREL
John Burkhart, NILU

PS(I apologize if the long list of addresses is distracting, but please
do check to see if I overlooked any of your colleagues who should be
represented. Feel free to forward, or send me names you feel I should
have included.)

[CRYOLIST] Graduate studentships in glacial earth systems modelling at Memorial University of Newfoundland

Three funded PhD positions in the Glacial Dynamics Group at the Department of
Physics and Physical Oceanography, Memorial University of Newfoundland, are
currently available:
(Colleagues are asked to bring this to the attention of competent
students who might be interested in these projects.)

1) Coupled ice and climate system modelling with a focus on high frequency
variability/instability. We know the climate system jumped around a lot during
the last glacial cycle, but models have yet to fully capture such climate
system variability. This project will focus on the well documented Heinrich
event 1 to Younger Dryas interval. It will examine sensitivity of climate
response to both meltwater injection chronologies and the numerical
representation of relevant processes.

This project also includes the following sub-project: Introduction of sub-grid
stochastic parametrizations to improve the representation of turbulent
processes in low resolution GCMs for long time-scale modelling. Results will be
compared against those of higher resolution models.

2) Analysis of high-frequency feedbacks in the glacial system between: ice
streaming - basal hydrology - grounding line displacement - calving. This
project will quantify bounds on potential instabilities in the system for the
Antarctic ice sheet. The introduction of stochastic components will be
considered. It will bound Meltwater Pulse-1a contributions from Antarctica as
well as potential future contributions to "abrupt" sealevel change.

This project will also entail calibration of the basal hydrology component of
the MUN glacial systems model.

3) Inversion of present-day North American sediment distribution. This
PhD project will invert the present-day distribution of glacially
transported sediments over North America to infer the history of
sediment production and transport. It will build on recently completed
work on erosion and sediment transport model development
(http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.quascirev.2013.02.017). It will also evaluate the
extent to which the existing sediment distribution can be used to further
constrain past glacial evolution and will test the regolith hypothesis for the
origin of the mid-Pleistocene transition.

This project will further examine the impact of fully coupled subglacial
hydrology, sediment production/transport/deposition, and basal drag
physics on both long-term ice-sheet evolution and high-frequency ice
sheet dynamics, in collaboration with project 2 above.

Applications are invited from candidates with an interest in glaciology,
numerical modelling, continuum mechanics, climate modelling, and/or Earth
systems science. Applicants must have achieved a BSc or Masters's degree in
physics, geophysics, applied mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, or closely
related areas. Applicants must also be interested in working in a collaborative
environment on computationally intensive projects.

Required skills:
-Some experience in using FORTRAN or C, and analysis packages such as
OCTAVE/MATLAB
-Knowledge of general physics (even better with understanding of
fluid dynamics and/or atmospheric/ocean physics)
-Fluency in relevant maths (linear/matrix algebra and differential
equations; statistics is very advantageous)

The group has a dedicated 540 core cluster (to be doubled in 2014) and
access to further computational resources through ACEnet.

IEDA Invites Applications for Data Rescue Mini-Awards

IEDA
(Integrated Earth Data Applications), the NSF data facility that operates EarthChem and the Marine Geoscience Data System, is looking to grant four Data Rescue Mini-awards as part of a Data Rescue Initiative. This initiative is intended to ensure that valuable legacy data sets that are in danger of being lost in the near future due to impending retirement or degradation of the original data source are preserved and made accessible to the community for re-use by inclusion in the IEDA data collections (EarthChem, Marine Geoscience Data System, SESAR). Priority will be given to datasets that are deemed to have the highest impact on future research by virtue of one or another unique characteristics such as quality, size, rarity, unique location or data type, The mini-grants will provide funds to investigators at the level of $7,000 (maximum) for each project to support proper compilation, documentation, and transfer of data sets to IEDA. We specifically encourage applications from late-career and near-retirement investigators, who are in possession of unpublished data that they cannot otherwise share and preserve.

Data sets must be consistent with the IEDA mission "to support access and preservation of solid earth data from the earth, ocean, and polar sciences". Preferred data sets are geochemical analyses of igneous rocks and marine sediments, and marine geology and geophysics data. Depending on interest and success of this pilot project, IEDA hopes to continue funding mini-awards like this in future years.

Applications (maximum 3 pages) should be submitted by April 5, 2013, to IEDA Director Kerstin Lehnert (lehnert@ldeo.columbia.edu), and should include
  • a brief description of the data sets that will be assembled, such as type of data, volume, format (.xls, .txt, grids, etc.), and current status (e.g. on tape, on paper, on-line, etc.)
  • a statement that explains the relevance of the data set(s) for future re-use
  • a project plan how the successful completion of the project will be achieved and to what extent IEDA staff is needed to assist. For sample-based data such as geochemical analyses, the sample archiving situation should be discussed.
  • a budget outline
The IEDA User Committee will review all applications and select awardees based on the scientific relevance of the data sets and prospect of the project¹s successful completion. Funded projects will need to complete the data compilation and
documentation by September 30, 2013. IEDA staff will work with each awarded investigator or group of investigators to help identify needed documentation, and will provide guidance and tools to facilitate data documentation and transfer.
