[CRYOLIST] AGU 2019: Multi-decadal to centennial variability in ice sheets and sea level

Dear all

I would like to share this AGU session on behalf of the conveners:

Session ID: 76741
Session Title: Multi-decadal to centennial variability in ice sheets and sea level
Section: Cryosphere
Abstract: Understanding the drivers behind multi-decadal to centennial-scale variability in ice sheets and sea level is crucial when planning for a warming world. However, the magnitude and timing of the response of ice sheets to past climatic changes remains poorly understood. This makes attribution of the causes of episodic and secular changes in mass balance, and their associated contribution to sea level change, challenging.

We welcome any abstracts seeking to understand or decipher temporal variability in ice sheets, ice streams, and ice shelves -- through modelling, observations or combinations thereof.

[CRYOLIST] AGU session on Arctic-midlatitude linkage

Dear colleagues,

We would like invite you to consider submitting an abstract to our session on *Arctic and midlatitude linkage: Causes and effects* at this year's AGU. The
deadline for submissions is Wednesday, July 31. Abstracts can be submitted
here - https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm19/prelim.cgi/Session/81534.

Thanks,
Yutian Wu, Xiangdong Zhang, Qinghua Ding, and Baek-Min Kim

Session ID: 81534
Session Title: . Arctic and midlatitude linkage: Causes and Effects
Section: Atmospheric Sciences

Session Description:
The Arctic has experienced an unprecedented sea ice loss and warming in recent decades. It is important to understand the processes that lead to the Arctic changes. Meanwhile, the Arctic changes could also impact the jet streams, storm tracks and possibly extreme weather events in the midlatitudes, which has important implications in understanding and predicting the midlatitude weather and climate.

The goal of this session is to synthesize both the causes and effects between the Arctic and the midlatitudes. Contributions from the following topics are encouraged: 1) what are the causes that lead to the Arctic sea ice decline and amplified warming? 2) what are the effects of the Arctic changes on the midlatitudes and the underlying mechanisms (i.e., atmospheric teleconnection, stratosphere-troposphere coupling, ocean processes)? We welcome studies that use theory, observations, model experiments to understand the Arctic-midlatitude linkage in various time scales including intraseasonal, interannual, and climate change time scales.

Conveners:
Yutian Wu (LDEO, Columbia)
Xiangdong Zhang (U. Alaska)
Qinghua Ding (UCSB)
Baek-Min Kim (Pukyong National University, Korea)

[CRYOLIST] Fall AGU Session: C034, Remote Sensing of the Cryosphere: Sea Ice

Hello fellow sea ice remote sensing folks:

Please consider submitting an abstract our Fall AGU session:

C034: Remote Sensing of the Cryosphere: Sea Ice

Sea ice is at the interface between the atmosphere and the ocean and it plays a major role in the Earth's climate system. Sea ice changes in the Arctic and Antarctic occur at large and small spatial scales, and with a wide temporal window from seconds to years. Remote sensing methods can provide data at all these scales and the range of different techniques available (e.g., microwave, visible, and infrared; active and passive; polarimetric, interferometric and hyperspectral, etc.) has made remote sensing a fundamental tool for the study of sea ice and its geophysical properties. This session aims to share recent progress made in the development and application of spaceborne, airborne, and ground-based remote sensing techniques to study sea ice. It will bring together presentations on remote sensing analysis, and how remote sensing can advance model evaluations, process studies, and interdisciplinary investigation at the ocean, cryosphere, and atmosphere interface.

Conveners: Walt Meier (NSIDC/CIRES/Univ. of Colorado), Ludovic Brucker (NASA GSFC, GESTAR USRA), Randy Scharien (Univ. of Manitoba)

[CRYOLIST] AGU Session: Seismic geomorphology

Dear colleagues,

Following a successful edition at the EGU meeting earlier this year, we warmly invite members on the list who might be interested in submitting an abstract to the following session at the AGU Fall Meeting:

S024 - Integration of Seismic Geomorphology, Stratigraphy, and Borehole-derived Data for Paleo-environmental Reconstruction

Session ID: 81167

Submission Deadline: Wednesday, 31 July at 23:59 EDT

“Seismic geomorphology has recently gained popularity due to the availability of regional 3D seismic reflection datasets, affordable computational power, and advancements made in seismic interpretation and visualization techniques. For this session we welcome submissions from a wide range of geological settings, thus, exposing seismic interpreters and non-specialists to a variety of geological perspectives, the latest seismic interpretation workflows, issues with equifinality, and examples of effective seismic-borehole integration, all under the theme of how these data are investigated, combined, and applied (e.g. paleo-environmental reconstruction, seafloor engineering, or carbon sequestration).”

We are looking forward to stimulating discussions amongst a multidisciplinary audience!

Abstracts can be submitted to: https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm19/prelim.cgi/Session/81167

Best wishes from the Conveners,

Florian Smit (University of Copenhagen)

Angela Slagle (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory)

Andrew Newton (Queen’s University Belfast)
