[CRYOLIST] PDRA opportunity in palaeoceanography/palaeoenvironmental research

Dear colleagues

We are seeking a Palaeoceanographer/Palaeoenvironmental Researcher (full time 12-month PDRA position with possible extension by up to 5 months) who will join us at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in Cambridge, UK, to work within the Thwaites Offshore Research (THOR) team (https://thwaitesglacier.org/index.php/projects/thor).  Ideally the post will start in February 2023, although a slightly later date (by April 2023) is possible.

The THOR project is part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) program (https://thwaitesglacier.org/), which is an ambitious joint UK-US science collaboration to reduce uncertainty in the projection of sea-level rise from Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica.

The PDRA will analyse sediment cores from the Amundsen Sea continental shelf to reconstruct past changes in ocean forcing of ice-sheet dynamics in the Amundsen Sea sector of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet with a special focus on Thwaites Glacier by using suitable geochemical and/or sedimentological techniques. Expertise in trace metal geochemistry (Mg/Ca) and stable isotope analysis of foraminifera is desirable although candidates with experience in applying any other relevant proxies for reconstructing ocean properties (e.g., biomarkers, clumped isotopes, multi-proxy) are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will work with Dr James Smith and Dr Claus-Dieter Hillenbrand in collaboration with scientists from BAS and various universities and research institutions in the U.S. and UK.

Closing date for applications is the 1st of December 2022:

Best wishes,
