Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Potsdam,
Germany, invites applications for a
Research Scientist in atmospheric observations with a focus on radiation
as an integrating quantity
Background:
Polar climate change is affected by various feedback factors like e.g.
sea ice retreat, changes in aerosol, clouds and moisture, and meridional
exchange. Essentially, all contributing processes cause an effect on
climate via their radiative impact. The atmospheric radiation is thus an
integrative quantity in the description of observed and modeled climate
change.
The position is in the field of atmospheric observations with an
integrating role in regard to climate model parameterisation in the
section 'Atmospheric Physics' at AWI Potsdam. Based on existing and new
measurements and instrumentation at the AWI polar station (e.g. at
AWIPEV research base in the Arctic), it is aimed to quantify parameters
that affect the radiation budget, the atmospheric radiation profile, and
the radiative effect in polar regions, and to translate the obtained
observational data for model parameterisations and their evaluation.
While, in general, the position will address the radiative effect on
climate change in Polar Regions, the topical focus (e.g. aerosol,
clouds, surface and boundary layer exchange processes) is not static but
may adapt over time according to novel arising research questions.
Tasks:
• synthesis of available observational data to converge with the
section's modeling activities
• identification of observational gaps in terms of parameterization
requirements
• development of new observational program at AWI infrastructure in
polar regions to enable model improvements via new parameterizations
• planning, supervising and operating new instrumentation
• planning and implementing polar expeditions
• translating observations into model parameterizations
Requirements:
• Outstanding PhD in physics, meteorology, or related field
• Practical experience in operation of instruments for the
observation of atmospheric parameters
• Experience in parameterization and numerical modelling of
atmospheric processes in climate models
• Profound knowledge on atmospheric radiation and polar processes
with radiative impact
• Profound knowledge in programing, statistics and data analysis
• Experience in organization and implementation of polar expeditions
or field campaigns is desirable
Further information:
This is a full-time position, limited to 3 years with the potential to
become permanent employment. It is also suitable for part-time
employment. Tenure time can be shortened depending on the candidate's
degree of qualification. The salary will be paid in accordance with the
Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation
(Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level
14. The place of employment will be Potsdam, Germany.
Please submit your application by December 31, 2021 exclusively online
