[CRYOLIST] Registration deadline 19 August: 2022 IGS British Branch & UK Antarctic Science conferences

Dear Colleagues,

This is the final cryolist circular for the 2022 IGS British Branch & UK Antarctic Science conferences being held at the University of Edinburgh from Tuesday 30 August to Friday 2 September 2022, advising of an in-person registration deadline of Friday 19 August. Further messages about the meetings will be directed only to registrants for either meeting.

We are delighted to report that we have received sufficient abstracts for both meetings by the previously posted abstract deadline last week – therefore there is a very exciting and full meeting in store, and we are presently in the process of drawing up the programme which should be ready for circulation to registrants next week.

If you still intend to come to the meeting but have not yet registered, please can you register as soon as possible please, and by a strict deadline of Friday 19 August.

If it helps anybody who is wavering:

·       We already have ~90 in-person delegates registered to IGS British Branch and ~60 in-person registered to the UK Antarctic Science Conference. At the moment, approximately 50% of the attendees identify as PhD students, and a further 20% or so are early-career researchers – just to give you a sense that there is an exciting mix of career stages represented already amongst the registrants.

·       Anybody who has offered a talk or a poster so far should consider this has been accepted. Most of you have registered too already, but a few have not.

·       We can accommodate up to 200 delegates in the meetings, but we do have limits of 100 on the conference meals. Our registration system will auto-block payments for the conference meals when these quotas are exceeded, so early booking is advised. The IGS meal will take place at https://www.vittoriagroup.co.uk/vittoriabridge/.  The UK Antarctic Science meal will take place at https://ghillie-dhu.co.uk/  Both of these meals are heavily subsidised for waged and unwaged PhD students courtesy of conference funding we have received from the University of Edinburgh and SAGES sages https://www.sages.ac.uk/

We can accommodate online registration until the slightly later date of 24 August.

All other announcements are included in a repeat of our earlier circular below and on the website, but if you have further queries please contact us on ncarigsbb@ed.ac.uk

Best wishes,

24

Dear Colleagues,

Registration is now open for the International Glaciological Society British Branch (IGSBB) and the UK Antarctic Science Conference (UKASC) from Tuesday 30 August to Friday 2 September 2022, hosted at the University of Edinburgh.

The IGSBB is an informal two-day meeting at which presentations are welcome on all aspects of ice and snow research, while the UKASC welcomes contributions on any aspect of Antarctic Science. We strongly encourage early-career researchers, including postgraduate students, to attend and present their work.

Interested? What you need to do now:

Book accommodation. Summer is extremely busy in Edinburgh and we encourage early booking of accommodation. Through the conference website there are presently some reduced rates available on university accommodation on a first come first served basis.

Submit your abstract! via the link at the top of the conference website - deadline 1 August 2022. In doing so you will indicate a preference between presenting a talk or a poster - more details on this at the foot of this message.

Format of the meetings and talks/posters The meetings will run in hybrid mode as follows:

*         IGS British Branch will run from Tuesday 30 August mid morning to Thursday 1 September noon.

*         The UK Antarctic Science Conference will run from 9am on Thursday 1 September to Friday 2 September mid-afternoon.

(Both meetings will overlap with presentations that combine the conference interests in Antarctic glaciology on the Thursday morning.)

*         We plan for oral-talk slots that are 12-15 minutes long. Talks may be presented in-person or online (live or pre-recorded).

*         For poster presenters, in-person presenters will be able to bring a standard poster for display on poster boards. We plan also to provide an option for presenting online posters, the format of which will depend on numbers of abstracts submitted, and may vary from simply a space for posters to be shared to a Gathertown space for online attendees.

We very much look forward to welcoming you to the meetings in autumn,
