[CRYOLIST] Postdoc position: Artificial Intelligence and remote sensing for glacier research at the Institute of Polar Sciences - Venice, Italy

*Background:*

Estimating the ice volume of Earth's glaciers is a grand challenge of Earth System science. Besides being a critical parameter to model glacier evolution, knowledge of glacier volume is fundamental to quantify global sea level rise and available freshwater resources. Under current global warming Asian glaciers are losing mass, making improved glacier ice volume estimates a top priority. The goal of the ICENET project is to develop an innovative deep learning-based model capable of exploiting the huge amount of available satellite data to improve the current estimates of ice volumes of all High Mountain Asia glaciers. ICENET will be jointly developed by the Institute of Polar Sciences, Ca' Foscari University of Venice and the University of California Irvine. The project is financed by Climate Change AI: https://www.climatechange.ai/blog/2022-04-13-innovation-grants

*Requirements:*

  • The position requires a PhD degree in computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering or similar fields.

  • Advanced knowledge of neural networks, deep learning and Tensorflow/Pytorch are required.

  • Experience in glaciology, remote sensing or Earth  system science is a plus.

*The position:*

The place of employment will be Venice, Italy. The targeted starting date is the 15th of October 2022, but a later start is possible. The position is offered for 12 months. The net monthly salary will amount to 1600-1700 EUR. A suitable workstation will be provided.
