[CRYOLIST] PhD projects at Monash University

Dear all,

Monash University is advertising PhD projects in ice sheet and glacier research to work with Prof Andrew Mackintosh, Dr Felicity McCormack and Dr Richard Selwyn Jones as part of the Monash Ice Sheet Initiative (MISI) group. The school/Monash University rank in the top 50-100 earth science departments/universities in the world, and Melbourne is ranked as one of the world's most liveable cities.

Projects are available on the following topics:

  1. The dynamic evolution of Antarctic ice shelves, and their sensitivity to change.

  2. The impact of past climate forcings on flow dynamics of East Antarctic glaciers.

  3. The sensitivity of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet to climate variability and change.

  4. Investigating past and future surface mass balance forcing in East Antarctica and its impact on ice sheet dynamics.

  5. The timing and magnitude of ice sheet thinning in East Antarctica during the last deglaciation, using cosmogenic nuclide (10Be and 14C) analysis.

  6. Modelling of mountain glaciers. The timescale (paleo, modern, future) and location (New Zealand, High Mountain Asia, global) is open.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to develop their own ideas, particularly where they overlap with the themes listed above. All projects will include significant national and international collaborations.

Funding, including stipend, fees and project costs, is available on a competitive basis to all candidates. Candidates are expected to have a strong background in Earth systems science or physics/mathematics/engineering/chemistry, with the background required depending on the project of interest. Experience in scientific computing (e.g. python, matlab, C/C++, fortran) or laboratory-based methods (e.g. geochemistry) is desirable, but not essential.

Candidates should address enquiries (cc all three) to andrew.mackintosh@monash.edu, felicity.mccormack@monash.edu and richard.s.jones@monash.edu. Please include in the email a 1-page letter of motivation, outlining your primary area of interest and reason for pursuing a PhD in this field, and your CV (including relevant academic grades and publications).

The deadline for domestic students (Australia/NZ) is 31 October 2021 and for international students is 31 August 2021. However, please contact us as soon as possible, and by the end of June at the latest, if you are interested.

Best wishes,

Andrew, Felicity and Richard
