Do you want to dive into glaciological applications of „Distributed Acoustic Sensing" and „Seismics While Drilling"?
Do you want to contribute to two of the largest ice-core deep-drilling projects going on right now, EastGRIP in Greenland and Beyond EPICA in Antarctica?
The University of Strasbourg, France, in collaboration with the Alfred Wegener Institute, Germany, are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to fill a full time position for two years. Please find more details below.

The University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Studies (USIAS) is offering a Postdoctoral Position in Cryoseismology (full time, 36h per week) for a duration of 2 years (1 year renewable for 1 year) to contribute to a project it has endorsed. The position starts October 1st, 2021. Salary will be based on experience following University of Strasbourg standards.
Background
The Antarctic ice sheet will play a major role for global sea level rise in the decades and centuries to come. Antarctic climate and mass balance have been highlighted by the IPCC Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate as key sources of uncertainty when predicting the future climate system and sea level and that significant challenges remain in understanding and representing the dynamics of the Antarctic ice sheets. At the same time, the ice sheet is a unique archive of the paleo atmosphere. The European project Beyond EPICA started to retrieve an ice core going back 1.5 Ma, into the Mid-Pleistocene Transition. Both aspects, correctly estimating future sea-level contributions and deciphering the paleoclimate archive, rely on decrypting the physical processes that control ice-sheet evolution over time. This project wants to determine physical properties in ice (elastic parameters, crystal orientation fabric, etc.), their spatial distribution and the characteristics of the underlying substrate around drill sites by employing seismological approaches which are new to glaciology, namely distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) and seismics while drilling (SWD), and develop machine learning (ML) approaches to perform automated data analysis. The established methodologies will be employed during the Beyond EPICA drilling to improve our knowledge of ice-sheet properties and dynamics.
Tasks
You will
- employ noise correlation techniques for the SWD data set acquired with DAS and conventional geophones from the EastGRIP project in order to obtain a seismic image of the ice internal and sub-surface structure and properties
- adapt and train a suitable ML approach for (cryoseismic) data analysis
- employ the ML approach to identify source properties and event arrivals
- contribute to data analysis from active source DAS borehole logging at EastGRIP
- contribute to the optimal design of future SWD and DAS deployments around glaciological drilling sites.
- publish the results in peer-reviewed open-access journals
Requirements
- Proven expertise and a PhD (or equivalent) in the field of (geo)physics, informatics, mathematics or related disciplines.
- Previous experience in geophysical or other data analysis and computer modelling is an asset, as is well-founded knowledge in glaciology and scientific experience with active or passive seismology.
- Strong coding skills in Python or similar languages.
- A distinct interest in the scientific exchange and communication with the group members and interdisciplinary collaborators is expected.
- Good language skills in spoken and written English since the working and project groups are composed of international researchers and the research results will be published in international journals.
The position will be placed at Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg (ITES), Strasbourg, France (https://ites.unistra.fr/) in close collaboration with the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, Germany (https://www.awi.de/).
