Dear colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention to a session convened by Steph McLennan and Cliff Atkins at the upcoming International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Science (ISAES 2019) in Incheon, Republic of Korea from 22-26 July 2019, Theme 10: Earth science informing environmental management and policy.
There are few environmental challenges the planet currently faces, especially in the Antarctic, that aren't in some way affected by fundamental geological processes. From solid earth influences on ice sheet dynamics, to biogeochemical cycling and landscape evolution, to modelling advances, there is considerable technical knowledge that earth science can offer to inform Antarctic science and policy. Further, there is growing international drive to proactively manage and protect sites of intrinsic geoscientific value.
This session aims to highlight how earth science is best positioned to inform and address issues of global change, human impacts at all scales, and support environmental management in Antarctica. We encourage contributions from all disciplines to highlight the successes and challenges in translating science into decisions both domestically and in the Antarctic Treaty System. We welcome contributions that discuss all aspects of the science-policy interface, evidence-based decision making, geoheritage, and geoconservation.
This session aims to be an interdisciplinary forum where the process and results of applied earth science are shared. By highlighting examples of earth science contributing to key policy and environmental challenges, this session will help start new initiatives and promote the value of applied science in the Antarctic Treaty System.
Abstracts submissions are open now until March 31st.
Kind regards,
Dr Steph McLennan & Dr Cliff Atkins
Session conveners

The Office of Polar Programs Advisory Committee has drafted a succinct and broad synthesis of recommended priorities for OPP research investments in the document.
The document: An Advisory Overview for the Office of Polar Programs, may be found here: https://apac01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nsf.gov%2Fgeo%2Fopp%2Fopp_advisory%2FPolar%2520Priorities.pdf&data=02%7C01%7Ccliff.atkins%40vuw.ac.nz%7C2bf926530e7d4412deb408d687c12707%7Ccfe63e236951427e8683bb84dcf1d20c%7C0%7C1%7C636845661009877041&sdata=vkH2RnyhA0w79LsM14dtupDWy5yMFcTUA2x3uIyUWu8%3D&reserved=0.
It is based on reports developed by the science and science-support communities over the past five years. The synthesized priorities will help inform science-funding leadership, other NSF advisory committees and others.
OPP's advisory committee invites the broader science and support-communities to review and comment on the document. When providing comments, please reference the corresponding line number in the document.
