Dear Colleagues,
Drs. Ian Hawes, Clive Howard-Williams, and Michael Gooseff are convening a session at the XIII International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Sciences (ISAES) in Incheon, Korea (July 22-26), and we are soliciting contributions. Below are the title and abstract (note that this can be found under Theme 5 and Theme 10 on the program web page, or you can find it in the list of sessions). We look forward to an excellent session focused on liquid water on the icy continent!
Significance of Antarctic Inland Freshwater Bodies - Revealing Past Processes and Projecting Responses to Change
The Antarctic continent is mostly covered by ice, yet streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes persist in the ice-free areas of the continent. In continental regions, most of these freshwater bodies are supplied by ice melt and many occupy closed basins. Their discharges and stores of water are consequently strongly affected by surface energy balances from recent weather conditions and integrated annual, decadal, and millennial climate signals. Extant salinity profiles, paleo-shorelines, ancient deltas and lake sediments record climate-dependent variations in flow and level from contemporary to ancient. These water bodies also harbor unique microbially-dominated ecosystems that have developed in response either regular drying, in the case of fluvial systems, or extreme light-dark cycles in the case of lentic systems, that have proved to be useful analogues for ancient earth and astrobiology. This session will feature presentations on the past and present conditions of Antarctic freshwater bodies that reveal their value in an otherwise icy continent, as well as their value in recording and projecting trajectory of change for both climate and aquatic systems.
