[CRYOLIST] Publication of the Final Report of the WMO Solid Precipitation Intercomparison Experiment (SPICE)

The final report of the Solid Precipitation Intercomparison Experiment (SPICE), organized by the Commission for Instruments and Methods of Observations (CIMO) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is now available at https://library.wmo.int/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=20742#.XFmMZq-ouUl

SPICE was carried out between 2013 and 2015 on twenty sites in fifteen countries, on all continents except Africa and Antarctica, and focused on assessing the performance of measurement of available instruments measuring and reporting solid precipitation, snow depth, and snow water equivalent, in a variety of climate conditions. The report includes, as a key component, assessments of the traceability of field references, for these measurements.

SPICE was carried out as a major international effort, and has been remarkable for the diversity of organizations which hosted SPICE tests, contributed with instruments, and were engaged in the data analysis and the derivation of results. In addition to National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, research organizations, academia, and the private sector played active roles and made unique contributions.

Additional information on the individual site setup and details of the experiment is available at http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/IMOP/intercomparisons/SPICE/SPICE.html
