Kia ora - An opportunity exists for a PhD project to develop scientific understanding from on-going ice-ocean datasets in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica. These include ice shelf cavity hydrographic moorings and ice tongue-ocean interaction measurements and the influences on polynya operation.
We are seeking a motivated student to conduct PhD studies on the topic with the specific details to be developed collaboratively. There will be a focus on numerical approaches (e.g. ROMS, MITgcm) to complement the observational datasets. Depending on timing and focus, opportunities for participation in field campaigns also exist. Some background context is at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyjt5zpNAeg and https://doi.org/10.1017/aog.2017.4
The student would be enrolled at a New Zealand university but based at the NIWA (http://www.niwa.co.nz) labs in Wellington, New Zealand.
Highly motivated MSc (or exceptional BSc/BEng) students with good results and a background in geophysics, physics, mathematics or engineering, are encouraged to get in touch. Timing is negotiable.
Send a short expression of interest and CV to Craig.Stevens@niwa.co.nz by 15 March 2019.
Best Regards
