Research Assistant

Job description

Fixed Term for 14 months, 37 hours per week

The School of Applied Sciences is seeking to appoint a fixed-term, 1.0 FTE Research Assistant for NERC-funded project: Fragmentation and melt of Arctic sea ice. This research investigates the role of thermodynamic melt in the fragmentation of Arctic sea ice. In this project, we will analyse a wide range of observational data sets to gain a new understanding of the fragmentation process of Arctic sea ice.
The gained knowledge will inform the sea-ice modelling group in the University of Reading to develop new sea-ice numerical model parameterisations to be implemented in climate models.

The successful applicant will undertake the analysis of a large volume of observational data sets (satellite imagery and aerial photographs) and publish the research in high-impact journals. Applicants need to have research experience in physical and/or computer sciences and a good understanding of analysing complex data sets. The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with the modelling team at the University of Reading and other project partners from the Met Office, National Oceanography Centre, British Antarctic Survey, and European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.

Informal queries should be made to Phil Hwang on 01484 471202 or email b.hwang@hud.ac.uk

Best wishes,

Phil
