[CRYOLIST] Jupyter Notebook Tools for Working with Greenland Mapping Project Data remotely now available

The Greenland Ice Mapping Project (GrIMP) funded by the NASA MEaSUREs program has now archived several TB of image, velocity, elevation, and glacier terminus data at NSIDC, representing a far greater volume than many users can store on their laptops or other computers.

Many studies require only a small subset of these data (e.g., for a particular glacier). As a result, the GrIMP project has developed several tools for accessing and working with the time-series of data remotely, eliminating the need for voluminous downloads in many studies.

The tools are all built from open-source Python code that is called from Jupyter notebooks. The examples have been structured with easily tweaked default parameters that can do much of what the typical user may wish to do, with little or no python knowledge.

The tools can subset the data to create time-series stacks, which can be used to generate publication-ready plots. There are also QGIS project and layer definition files that allow working with remote copies of the data at NSIDC using QGIS.

The are several GitHub repositories, which can be reached by following the links at this site.

The tools can be installed and run on local or cloud-based machines.

Alternatively, the notebooks can be run on pre-installed, free binder instances by following the binder links provided with each set of notebooks.
