PS: Scientific Event A2 description

Scientific Exploitation of Operational Missions in Oceanography and
Cryosphere, Use of In-situ Data and Assimilation in Models

The observation of the Oceans and the Cryosphere is highly dependent on
the recent and future launches of Earth Observation satellites,
sponsored by governments through national and regional space agencies,
including Jason-2, GOCE, CryoSat-2, SMOS, SMAP, HY-2, SARAL-AltiKa, NPP,
GOCI, SGLI, CFOSAT, Jason-3, the CYGNSS constellation, etc. A new series
of satellites, called Sentinels, are about to be launched by ESA,
sponsored by the European Commission, to satisfy operational
requirements to supply Earth Observation services. The Sentinel-1,
Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 missions will crop a wealth of
state-of-the-art measurements, which will be of high interest to
complement scientific missions. The scientific exploitation of these
data sets is an opportunity for further R&D and increased cooperation at
international level to improve our capabilities to understand and
monitor the interaction between ocean dynamics, air/sea boundary
processes, energy and heat transport and their impact on primary
production, sea level and climate. Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-3 will also
significantly benefit the observation of the Cryosphere, sea-ice
thickness and extent, ice sheet mass balance and snow cover and
classification, as well as high latitude oceanography impacted by the
presence of sea-ice. Also new sensors are under study, for example
GNSS-R and interferometry for currents. A community is gathering around
the observation capabilities of these next-generation instruments to
increase our knowledge of the complex Earth System.

This Symposium will be focused on satellite observations and potential
synergy with in-situ data and modelling tools, and their applications
for monitoring the cryosphere, the coastal zone (currents, upwelling,
vortices, algal blooms, water turbidity, freshwater inflow, oil
pollution), for ocean and sea-ice modelling and assimilation, for
operational oceanography and forecasting (including joint use of in-situ
data, and wind and wave forecasting), for air-sea interactions also in
extreme events like hurricanes, for ocean mesoscale processes (including
eddies and planetary waves), for calculating the absolute dynamic
topography, for understanding the oceanic response to climate change,
for ocean salinity, for the carbon cycle in the ocean, the biological
processes and their impact on climate, biogeochemical cycles and
productivity, for estuaries and monitoring river discharge to the ocean,
for data access, tools and toolboxes, for new sensors and future
missions, and for education, cooperation and outreach.

Sub-sessions will be created after the abstract submission analysis.
Submitters are encouraged to mention in their abstract (as a keyword)
the sub-session theme they are submitting to:

1- Cryosphere and Polar Oceans

2- Coastal and Inland Seas (including estuaries and river discharge to
the ocean)

3- Oceanic Response to Climate Change
