1. Employment Offer - Computer Science Engineer or Programmer

Canatec (www.canatec.ca) is initiating a 2 year R&D project to develop software products for display, analysis and use of information to assist marine operations in ice/iceberg zones. We are seeking a person with a recent Masters or PhD to conduct this work under the supervision of senior experts and international collaborators, and then carry on after project end as a permanent employee.

R&D Project Objectives

Canatec makes several programs, some sold as commercial products, some used in house to support service contracts. All have been developed by domain specialists rather than software professionals. The goal of this R&D project is to improve the structure of the programming, extend functionality and create a more integrated suite of products. A significant amount of R&D is required to create automated links with cutting edge sensors and control systems, overcome limitations of restricted bandwidth in transmitting data and model loosely-defined industrial practices in complex environments.

The specific objectives are:

1. Update ICE06, a historical atlas of world wide ice data, carrying on from prior uncompleted work to create an updated version, and implementing plans to involve other ice and oceanographic data bases, allow access via the web and create new versions for educational use.

2. Extend our Ice Advisory, Surveillance and Management Software for assisting operations on board drillships/rigs in ice, into a decision-support tool, with greater automated data inputs, integration of standalone forecasting tools and creation of better displays to support decision-making from groups in different locations. We will also extend the use of this tool to ships transiting ice zones.

3. Work with another in-house research project to help automate the analysis of satellite imagery of ice and to facilitate the post-processing of LiDAR data.

4. Improve the automatic presentation and analysis of data on our Cantrack website from our ice and ocean drift beacons.

5. Prepare all these programs to be more successful commercial products with appropriate design, sales and service support.

Applicant Qualifications
Following are the non-negotiable requirements of the funding agency:
  • Canadian Citizen or Resident
  • Masters or PhD degree obtained within past 2 years.

Technical qualifications will include training in computer science/engineering/software, with knowledge of programs like C#, Python and GIS applications

Canatec requires the candidate to have:
  • strong communications skills in English
  • work in a team setting, with professionals who are not programmers
  • an entrepreneurial outlook
  • an interest in engaging with clients
  • interest in building practical tools for commercial application.

Partners
We are securing the involvement of several universities, companies and government agencies to participate in this project, in Canada and other countries. The candidate will work with these groups and probably spend time at their premises during the project.

Funding and Application

Major funding for this R&D project work comes from AITF and their program R&D Associates (www.albertatechfutures.ca). The candidate will work with Canatec to submit an application to this agency. We have had a very high rate of success in prior applications.

Timing, Followon and Location

Timing - An application must be submitted before 1 April 2014; notification of award will be late June; start of work, July. We might accept a good candidate for the next funding round 3 months later.

Followon - The R&D project will last 2 years, after which the candidate will continue to work with Canatec on other R&D projects and commercial contracts. During the AITF-funded period, the candidate will work 20% of time on other projects to prepare for this longer term function.

Location - Canatec’s Calgary office, in the research park at the University of Calgary.

The Company
Canatec (www.canatec.ca) is a Calgary-based company with offices in The Hague and St. John’s that has been involved in ice analysis to support offshore petroleum operations in the Arctic for 30 years. We are a world leader in this niche. Canatec carries out analyses of ice environments by field and desk studies, supports field operational projects with on-site personnel at sea, develops specialized ice analysis software and ice tracking instrumentation, and trains ice advisory teams. We work in all Arctic offshore theatres as well as other marine zones where ice cover is an issue, eg Sea of Ohkotsk and Caspian Sea.

2. Employment Offer Satellite/UAV Imagery Analysis of Ice and Icebergs

Canatec (www.canatec.ca) is initiating a 2 year R&D project to develop software tools to improve gathering, interpretation, display and transmisson of images of ice and icebergs obtained from satellites and UAVs. We are seeking a person with a recent Masters or PhD (preferably) to conduct this work under the supervision of senior experts and international collaborators, and then carry on after project end as a permanent employee.

R&D Project Objectives
Project goal is to improve techniques for manipulating and analysing satellite/remote sensed images to support offshore petroleum operations and ship transits in ice-iceberg infested zones, and embody these techniques in a software form that can be sold as a stand-alone tool for field operators.

Specific objectives are:

1. Improve access to useful satellite/UAV imagery in any ice covered marine area, especially arctic zones of interest to shippers and offshore petroleum companies

2. Implement ways of speeding image analysis through computer-assisted recognition techniques, tracking features of interest and cross-referencing images from different sensor systems

3. Improve the presentation of local ice charts, forecasts and alerts to marine operations managers

4. Develop tools for transmitting data-intensive imagery in remote, polar marine areas with limited bandwidth

5. Create secure archives of imagery and derived products.

Applicant Qualifications
The non-negotiable requirements of the funding agency are:
  • Canadian Citizen or Resident
  • Masters or PhD degree obtained within past 2 years.
Candidates may come from a variety of educational backgrounds:
  • Geography or Geomatics, ideally with knowledge of remote sensing of ice, snow
  • Electrical/electronics engineering specializing in signal processing and radar/lidar sensing
  • Mathematics/software engineering.
In addition, the candidate should have:
  • excellent report writing skills in English
  • an entrepreneurial outlook
  • an interest in engaging with clients
  • a desire to conduct field support work on board ships in the Arctic
  • an interest in building practical tools.

Partners
Seven universities, companies and government agencies have agreed to participate in this project, in Canada, Holland and Denmark; the candidate will work with these groups and probably spend time at their premises during the project.

Funding and Application
Funding for the project has been obtained in a previous competition, but the original candidate was unable to accept the offer due to unforeseen circumstances. The same project will be resubmitted, with the new candidate and partners; this means we have a very high chance for success in the competition. The funding agency is AITF and the program R&D Associates (www.albertatechfutures.ca). The candidate will work with Canatec to modify and resubmit this application.

Timing, Followon and Location

Timing - Application must be submitted before 1 April 2014; notification of award will be late June; start of work, July.
