Dear Cryolisters,
I somehow had the impression at the end of IPY4 that we fixed the date
for IPY5 for 2032, as my recollection was that we agreed we had started
too late on the ramp-up to IPY4. Apologies if I missed it, but this
week I searched the cryolist archives and found nothing about IPY5, a
google search found only some mentions of survey of interest about it a
few months ago, and trying a few web pages at random only turned up that
www.ipy5.org was available, so I bought it and posted my thoughts about
it there...
It seems to me that the projects that are being proposed now will be the
ones who's results 3-5 years from now will be what's used to convince
our national legislatures over those next several years to provide
additional funding for projects that have a truly IPY focus with enough
time for their science agencies award them by 2030-31. That is, 8 years
isn't so far away and we need to look for new ways now to make people
look up then. So if it's already official and I can't find it then I
think we need to start advertising better, and if it's not already
official then I don't think it's too early to start thinking and talking
about in the meantime. Just my two cents...
Cheers,
Matt
PS. I'm happy to turnover www.ipy5.org to anyone who wants to be a
hero...
