[CRYOLIST] PhD opportunity at the University of Alaska Fairbanks

Glaciology/Geophysics PhD opportunity at the University of Alaska Fairbanks
*note, we might have more openings for students, depending on funding

Project VeLveT ICE: The eVoLution of Fabric and Texture of Ice at WAIS
Divide, West Antarctica
PI Erin Pettit (http://exploreice.org)
Collaborative with Dartmouth College, PI Rachel Obbard

Start date: Fall 2015

The deformation of ice is sensitive to microstructural properties and
impurities. Strong gradients in these properties lead to strong
variations in rheology which can cause disturbance or folding of layers
in the ice. The WAIS Divide Ice Core borehole provides an opportunity to
study the deformation of deep ice in situ and connect with properties
and climate history measured in the ice core.

The PhD student will lead the measurement and analysis of borehole
deformation and interpret these measurements towards an understanding of
the relation between deformation, fabric, texture, impurity content, and
to climate history. This PhD student will also work closely with the
team at Dartmouth College who are conducting laboratory measurements of
ice microstructure on ice core samples.

This project will involve deployment to Antarctica in Dec/Jan 2016/17.

This project also has significant opportunities for education and
outreach. We currently have a Polartrec teacher involved
(http://www.polartrec.com/member/yamini-bala), we will be hosting a WAIS
Divide Art Contest, and there is an option to be involved in the Girls
on Ice program (http://girlsonice.org).

The UAF Glaciology program (http://glaciers.gi.alaska.edu/) is a strong,
collaborative, research team with 8 faculty, several post docs and
numerous graduate students. Strong snow, sea ice, and permafrost
research makes UAF internationally renown for crysospheric research. Our
students receive a broad cryospheric training and there are often
opportunities to be involved in research or field work outside of their
primary project.

As part of our geophysics program, please note our entrance requirements
include background in linear algebra, differential equations, and
computational skills (additional background in PDEs is recommended). We
encourage students from undergraduate programs in geology, geophysics,
engineering, math, physics, or related fields to apply. To ensure
consideration, please submit your application by January 15, 2014.

I encourage any interested students to contact me at pettit@gi.alaska.edu

Thanks!
