Dear colleagues,
Over the past two years the Programme for Monitoring of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE) has been developing a comprehensive database of surface mass budget observations from the Greenland ice sheet ablation area and peripheral glaciers. The effort is nearing completion and the database is expected to be publically released in 2015. We currently have just over 2400 unique point measurements of surface mass budget spanning from 1938 to the present. Most of the data originate from grey literature, unpublished documents or field notes.
Despite our best efforts, however, we are still missing data from a handful of known expeditions, such as Alfred Wegener’s 1930 Qaamarujuk Glacier observations. We also might be unaware of some measuring efforts, especially private sector prospecting work. In the hopes of rounding up these data, we invite you to look at the recent PROMICE newsletter No. 7 (http://www.promice.dk/Newsletter.html), which provides an overview of which data are already in the database, and which data are still missing.
Please get in touch with me or any other member of the www.promice.dk team if you can help us out with this community data assimilation project!
On behalf of the PROMICE team,
Horst Machguth
