[CRYOLIST] PhD And Post-doc Position at the Institute of Arctic and Marine Biology- University of Tromso, Norway

1)  PhD position in Marine Night project

In the Marine Night project (http://www.marinenight.mare-incognitum.no) there is a PhD position available. The project project is aimed at the growth, distribution and ecology of blue mussels on Svalbard. Blue mussels have in previous warmer periods following the last glaciation been common on Svalbard, last during the Viking ages 1000 years BP. Recently, living blue mussels have been recorded frequently from the western coast of Svalbard, and their recent reappearance have been seen as a direct result of the current changes in climate both locally and globally. Today, there are known areas in which blue mussels are known to live in both Kongsfjorden and Isfjorden on the west coast of Svalbard. The successful candidate will first of all work with the oceanographical and biological factors that regulate the distribution, growth and reproduction of these.

In the Marine Night project (http://www.marinenight.mare-incognitum.no) there is a PostDoc position available. The main objective of the project is to map and characterize the processes that govern the marine environment during the Arctic polar night. Most of the fieldwork will be on Svalbard. The project is based upon the recent discoveries made by the project participants, including diel vertical migration of zooplankton, recruitment of benthic organisms and the importance of bioluminescence during the polar night.
