The WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF is part of the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL and thus of the ETH Domain. WSL focuses on the sustainable use and protection of landscapes and habitats, and a responsible approach to natural hazards. WSL employs approximately 500 people, of whom 130 work at SLF in Davos. The Research Unit Snow and Permafrost is concerned with the physical properties of the material snow in relation to its microstructure and is looking in the Group Snow Cover and Micrometeorology for a
Cold wind tunnel Scientist
You will investigate the turbulent exchange of mass and energy over snow with a special emphasis on two-phase flow phenomena created by drifting and blowing snow, both in the cold wind tunnel facility and in the field. You will also work on new sensor technology, model formulations and you will supervise PhD students. Furthermore, you will develop innovative research projects, will search for third-party funding and will publish your results in international journals. Your results are applied to improve natural hazard warning, climate change assessment, and weather forecasting.
A PhD degree in Fluid Dynamics, Physics, or Meteorology and relevant practice in publication writing is required. You have experience in experimental work, sensor technology as well as LabView, R, or/and C++ programming skills, and you are willing to work in harsh conditions in our cold wind tunnel. In addition, you are fluent in English and German, oral and written.
Please send your complete application using reference number 792 to Jasmine Zimmermann, Human Resources WSL/SLF. Michael Lehning, Tel. +41 (0)81 417 01 58, or Stefan Horender, Tel. +41 (0)81 417 03 81, will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information.
