[CRYOLIST] ICESat-2 post-doc position at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center

The ICESat-2 Project Science Office is looking for a post-doc to help with sea ice related research.

The goals of the project are to better understand the potential of ICESat-2, MABEL (the ICESat-2 simulator) and other airborne lidars to study the spatial and temporal variability of sea ice extent and freeboard in both the Arctic, and Antarctic.  ICESat-2 will be substantially different than ICESat in that it will use a micro-pulse lidar operating at 10kHz and 532 nm.   In preparation for ICESat-2, the successful applicant will conduct studies of the expected performance of ICESat-2 for sea ice freeboard retrieval based on existing MABEL data, simulating ground tracks at different seasons, and drawing on the work that has already been done modeling the interaction of 532nm light with polar ocean water and sea ice.  The successful applicant will work closely with the ICESat-2 Project Science Office as well as members of the ICESat-2 science definition team to guide and conduct additional model studies, field campaigns and operations planning in support of ICESat-2.
The results are to be published in a timely fashion in international journals, at ICESat-2 science team meetings, and appropriate conferences.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must hold a completed Ph.D. in atmospheric science, oceanography, geophysics, or another relevant area. We are looking for a researcher with a strong scientific understanding of sea ice, remote sensing, and altimetry. Experience with any of the following will be seen as an asset: sea ice altimetry, modeling studies, measurements of ice and snow physical properties,  or experience from polar field work. The applicant's publication record will also be considered as an asset. We seek a candidate who is a team worker yet can conduct independent research.

Please contact me for questions or send applications by September 15, 2013.
