The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University has a vacancy for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Remote Sensing and Glaciology.
Funded by an RCUK-CONICYT grant, the project is ‘Glacial hazards in Chile: processes, assessment, mitigation and risk management strategies’. The project is a collaborative research project between the UK and Chile. It is jointly funded by the RCUK (Research Councils UK) via NERC (the Natural Environment Research Council) in the UK and CONICYT (CONICYT; Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica) in Chile.
The ideal candidate will have skills in remote sensing, handling spatial data in a Geographic Information System (GIS), and specialist subject knowledge in glaciology and geomorphology. They will contribute to remote sensing and glaciological data collection and analysis, including fieldwork in Chile, as well as to the broader development, delivery and dissemination of the research project. In particular, the post-holder will be responsible for undertaking remote sensing analysis and mapping of past, present and future Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) sites in Chile to produce the first complete inventory of former GLOFs in Chile and to identify sites that have the potential to cause GLOF hazards in the future.
The post is for a fixed-term period from 1st February 2016 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to 31 January 2018.
Closing date: Sunday 3rd January 2016
Interview date: Tuesday 12th January 2016
