Dear Colleagues,
Reminder! We are looking to hire a Postdoctoral Associate or Assistant Research Scientist to work on improving satellite-derived estimates of ice-sheet mass balance over both the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets. The scope of the work is flexible based on your interests; however, during the first two years, some of the work will focus on both modern-day satellite altimetry analysis as well as investigating future needs in mapping surface topography over ice sheets. You will work on a project funded by NASA’s new Surface Topography and Vegetation (STV) Incubation Science Team (https://science.nasa.gov/earth-science/decadal-stv), which is tasked to provide guidance on the scientific needs for NASA’s next generation STV mission. Much of the work will require analysis of existing altimetry data over ice sheets (e.g., ICESat-2, CryoSat-2) as well as surface process model output (e.g., surface mass balance and firn densification models). The position is 100% funded for 2 years with the opportunity to extend your position through additional projects (as PI or Co-I).
Great prior experiences to have, but not essential: (i) wrangling altimetry data, (ii) working with climate and/or firn model data, (iii) writing Python/Matlab/etc. code, (iv) model-data fusion or assimilation, and/or (v) a genuine curiosity about how an ice sheet works and how we measure them from space.
The hire would be employed by the University of Maryland’s Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) and affiliated and housed at the Cryospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. We are flexible in the type of hire we can offer: title, salary, and benefits will largely depend on your experience and qualifications as set by the ESSIC hiring committee. Annual salary will likely be in the range of $75-100k, although it is flexible given experience. Additional benefits include retirement contributions, health/dental care, maternity/paternity leave, sick leave and vacation. Working remotely is possible on a case-by-case basis.
Funding is available to travel and collaborate with our project partners across the US and present at national/international meetings, although this is not a requirement if your personal situation prevents it.
The position has funding for a minimum of two years (pending successful annual reviews), while opportunities to extend your stay and/or work on additional projects will be encouraged as desired. The position has promotion potential under the ESSIC guidelines. Start date is flexible. Please submit a CV and cover letter to brooke.c.medley@nasa.gov by February 17, 2023.
For further information please do not hesitate to get in touch: brooke.c.medley@nasa.gov. I look forward to hearing from you!
