[CRYOLIST] Dissertation Survey: A combined approach to identify the dominant process in valley formation using hypsometry and human perception

Dear Cryolist,

I hope this is alright to post in this group. I am an undergraduate student at the University of Sheffield studying BSc Geography with a particular interest in glaciology and geomorphology. I am currently completing my dissertation looking at valley formation by glacial and fluvial erosion. In particular the differences between what hypsometry suggests was the dominant erosional process, and, based on the shape and structure of these valleys what the human eye perceives to be the dominant erosional process in the formation of these valleys.

It would be greatly appreciated if some of the experienced geomorphologists in this group would be willing to partake in this survey. This should take no more than 30 minutes and should hopefully be an enjoyable trip around some of the earths most dramatic landscapes using Google Earth.

If you are willing to complete the survey instructions can be found below.

How to complete the survey:

Each valley must be scored from 0-10 based on your level of confidence in which process was dominant in the formation of each valley. Using only the 3D imagery displayed to you through Google Earth.

0 = Very confident the valley was formed by fluvial erosion.
5 = Unsure if the valley was formed by glacial or fluvial erosion.
10 = Very confident the valley was formed by glacial erosion.

To access the survey:

Attached is a KML file containing the google earth presentation, please download this and save the file to your documents.

Also attached is a blank results sheet for you to record your confidence values for each valley out of 10.

To access the Google Earth presentation please open Google Earth on your browser or follow this link: https://www.google.com/earth/index.html

Please click Launch Earth.

Then select the "Map Style" tab from the menu on the left-hand side of your screen and select "clean" as your map style.

Click the "Menu" tab from the top left of the screen, select "Settings", then turn off flight animation.

Click the "Projects" tab from the menu on the left-hand side of your screen and click "Open".

Then select "Import KML file from computer" and select the KML file you saved earlier.

This should open the project entitled "Google Earth Valley Analysis".

Click "Present" and click through each valley recording your confidence value for each valley in the results sheet.

Once completed please save the completed results sheet and send back to me via email (tomghumphries@btinternet.com).

If these could be returned to me by the 15th of February that would be much appreciated.

If you have any problems please get in touch.

Many thanks

Tom Humphries
