Dear colleagues,
we are following up with our email sent 2 weeks ago.
We would be pleased to have you contributing to our IGS Sea Ice Symposium (June 4-9 2023) session "Climate Data Records of sea ice: what's next?"
The focus of this session is on multi-decadal and multi-missions Climate Data Records (CDRs), ideally covering both polar regions. We invite scientific presentations on state-of-the-art methods and/or datasets addressing the seven sea ice Essential Climate Variables (ECVs), especially the four ECVs recently introduced in GCOS IP-22: albedo, temperature, snow thickness, and age. We also welcome presentations about interfacing sea-ice CDRs with climate models (e.g., observation simulators, accounting for observation and model uncertainties, etc.), intercomparison of CDRs, and novel approaches to verifying climate simulations against CDRs.
For submission of your abstract please go to https://www.abstracts.igsoc.org/92a/. We encourage you to submit now; deadline is February 17 2023.
More information, e.g. about the registration, can be found here: https://igs2023.awi.de/participation/registration/
Best regards
Thomas Lavergne, Wiebke Margitta Kolbe, and Stefan Kern
---------------------------------------------
Enhancement of satellite remote sensing capabilities, improvement of retrieval methods' maturity, and ongoing desire to better understand and forecast the highly varying Polar Oceans sea ice cover - among others - has driven a revision of the sea ice Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) realized in the newest Implementation Plan of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS IP-22) released in November 2022. This 5-year plan calls for preparing Climate Data Records (CDRs) for these seven sea ice ECVs: sea-ice concentration, thickness, motion, albedo, temperature, snow thickness, and age. We plan to conclude our session with a discussion to highlight community recommendations for tackling the sea ice ECVs over the next 5 years.
