[CRYOLIST] Glacial hydrology PhD position at U. of Arkansas

An NSF funded 3-year PhD graduate research assistantship is available
at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville for a project studying
Greenland Ice Sheet hydrology.

The project, "Understanding GrIS moulin hydrology and links to ice
motion," will instrument moulins and supraglacial streams on the
Greenland Ice Sheet and use collected data to explore the
relationships between moulin discharge, ice motion, and evolution of
the subglacial drainage system. The work will involve two summer field
seasons on the ice sheet in 2017 and 2018. The project will be
conducted in collaboration with Dr. Jason Gulley at the University of
South Florida. In addition to participating in field work, the PhD
student at Arkansas will develop models of subglacial hydrology. These
models, in combination with field data, will improve understanding of
the growth and closure dynamics of subglacial flow networks and
explore the implications of these dynamics for glacier motion under
conditions of increased melt.

Fayetteville is a great place to live (recently ranked as the 3rd best
place to live in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report,
http://realestate.usnews.com/places/rankings-best-places-to-live).
Northwest Arkansas has a vibrant art and music scene, a strong
microbrew culture, and a large network of bike trails and parks.
Located on the edge of the Ozarks, outdoor recreation opportunities
abound, including rock climbing, hiking, canoeing, caving, and
whitewater kayaking.

We are seeking a PhD student to start in the spring or fall of 2017.
The deadline for application for spring admission is October 1, 2016.
The deadline for fall admission is January 15, 2017. Well-qualified
applicants will have a strong quantitative background. Programming
experience in Python or other languages is also a plus. Applicants
with a non-traditional background for geoscience (e.g. physics,
applied mathematics, engineering) are also encouraged to apply.
