Dear colleagues,
You will find on:
http://climato.be/melt-2016
my first interpretations of the Greenland ice sheet SMB anomalies simulated by the regional climate model MAR over this summer 2016.
According to MAR (forced by NCEP-NCARv1), the run-off rates in 2016 have been the 3rd highest after the 2010 and 2012 summers. This quasi record in run-off is mainly the result of a significant larger bare ice extent in some areas (as a consequence of lower than average winter accumulation) and the background warming (Global Warming). The role of anomalies in the general circulation seems to be small over Greenland while the JJA NAO has been significantly negative in 2016.
You will find the full story on my web site but don't forget that it is model results and not observations.
Daily outputs from MAR over the 2016 summer are available here:
ftp://ftp.climato.be/fettweis/MARv3.5/Greenland/NCEPv1_1948-2016_20km-daily-raw/
but let me know if you plan to use these results for publication.
Have a nice week-end,
Xavier
