Job Title:         Post-Doctoral Research Associate: Glaciomarine Geology/Greenland

(001803)

Company:           Durham University

Department:      Department Of Geography

Position Type:   Research (Grade 7; £31,656; Full time/Fixed term/2yrs)

The Geography Department at Durham University seeks to appoint a Post-doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) for a period of two years, specialising in glacial/marine geology and palaeo-environmental reconstruction to work on a project investigating the Quaternary/Holocene history of the Northeast Greenland Ice Stream (NEGIS). Understanding the impacts of climate change on ice sheets and the subsequent changes to global sea-level over 100-1000yr timescales are key scientific and societal challenges. This project will focus on the NEGIS which controls the flow of ice from NE Greenland to the Atlantic from a drainage basin holding a sea-level equivalent of ~ 1.1m. This sector of the ice sheet is predicted to be vulnerable to climatic changes and understanding how it will evolve is critical for predicting rates of future global sea level rise. Indeed, the ice shelves that front the NEGIS are known to have collapsed during the Mid-Holocene Thermal Maximum. The overall aim of the project is therefore to reconstruct the past behaviour of NEGIS in order to validate and test the sensitivity of models that predict ice sheet behaviour over 100-1000yr timescales.

The PDRA will help to collect sediment cores from the areas adjacent to the NEGIS. They will also analyse glacial and marine sediments in order to generate records of both ice stream/shelf advance/retreat and palaeo-ocean temperature change over the last 15,000 years. The post will require an advanced knowledge of geological, geophysical and sedimentological data acquisition and techniques for the investigation of glacial and marine sediments. A working knowledge of multi proxy analyses of palaeo-oceanographic sediment archives will also be required (e.g. forams; diatoms; sediment geochemistry and stable isotopes).

This project is supported through NERC (UK) and the Alfred Wegener Institute (Germany) and will include two research cruises to NE Greenland in 2016 and 2017 working in collaboration with partners at the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Aberdeen. The PDRA will join the Ice Sheets and Sea Level research group at Durham, and will have access to an extensive suite of analytical facilities including multi-sensor core loggers, XRF, XCT X-Ray and microscope laboratories. The post will start from 1st June 2016 for 24 months and will include cruises in summer 2016 and 2017.
