A final call for abstracts for our AGU 2015 Fall Meeting session (Session ID#: 8976) entitled:
"Why is Antarctic sea ice extent increasing and why do coupled climate models not reproduce observations?"
Abstract
In stark contrast to the Arctic, there has been an increase in Antarctic sea ice extent through the satellite record. The reasons for the increase remain poorly understood, particularly as coupled climate models have struggled to reproduce this trend; the vast majority of CMIP5 ensemble members simulate a decrease, generating a significant source of uncertainty in their projections of future climate. Local atmospheric, cryospheric and oceanic processes have all been proposed as drivers for increasing Antarctic sea ice and hypotheses also differ as to whether the observed trend is anthropogenically-forced or simply decadal-scale natural variability. Moreover, the homogeneity of the satellite record itself has also been questioned. This session will provide an opportunity to bring together these different research strands to enable discussion focussed around this key challenge in global climate modelling. We welcome submissions that address this challenge through numerical mod
elling, observations or reanalysis data.
The session is being convened by James Pope (British Antarctic Survey), Marilyn Raphael (University of California Los Angeles) and Graham Simpkins (University of New South Wales), if you have any questions about the session, please feel free to contact James (japope@bas.ac.uk). We are especially keen for abstracts from early career researchers and are looking for variety of abstracts covering modelling, reanalyses and observations.
Abstract submission closes at 11:50 EDT on Wednesday 5th August and abstract submission for our session can be found here: https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm15/preliminaryview.cgi/Session8976
