[CRYOLIST] MSc Position in SAR Remote Sensing of Snowpack Dynamics at the University of Victoria

Dear Cryolist-ers,

The Ice Covered Ecosystems (ICE) – Remote Sensing Lab in the Department of Geography, University of Victoria is seeking applications for an MSc Studentship in SAR Remote Sensing of Snowpack Dynamics.

The project. Estimation of snow pack melt and melt related structures using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. Newly launched satellite synthetic aperture radars (SARs) offer potential for improvements to existing snow property retrieval algorithms and gridded snow products. We are looking a qualified student to examine the utility of satellite SAR for the further development of a snow depth and snow density gridded product which is ready to ingest SAR data. The successful candidate will examine an existing suite of SAR and snow parameters in order to optimize SAR as a standalone or complementary remote sensing tool for inclusion in a gridded product. The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate and interact with others in the ICE Remote Sensing lab conducting cryosphere and remote sensing research.

Expected Start Date and Duration. September 1st, 2016. 24 months duration, with a competitive stipend provided.

Qualifications. Candidates for this position must be highly motivated and have a degree in Physical Geography, Ecology, Geomatics, or a related Earth/Environmental Science field. Applications are invited from candidates with an interest in snow cover, snow ablation, remote sensing, ecological applications, geophysics, and/or snow hydrology. The candidate should be self-motivated, with excellent writing and communication skills. Additional required skills include: experience with large remote sensing datasets and analysis in packages such as IDL/ENVI or PCI Geomatica; proficiency in GIS, statistical analysis, and data visualization; and knowledge of geophysics, preferably the evolving snow characteristics relevant to microwave scattering.

Application materials. Enquiries and applications including a letter of intent that describes your academic and career goals as well as research interests, a curriculum vitae, transcripts of all post-secondary institutions you have attended, and full contact information for two professional referees who can provide reference letters should be e-mailed to: Dr. Randy Scharien at randy@uvic.ca.

Submission deadline. Applications will be considered until July 31st, 2016.

Regards,

Randy
