Dear Cryolist members,
I would like to draw your attention to the following Postdoc opportunity:
Post-doc in Modelling of interactions between waves and sea ice.
Start Date: As soon as possible.
Location: Nansen Environmental Remote Sensing Center (www.nersc.no), Norway.
Duration: 2 years initially, with a possible extension to 3 years.
The post-doc will work on the project neXtWIM (funded by the Norwegian Research Council),
which has the purpose of coupling a waves-in-ice model (WIM) to the next-generation Lagrangian sea-ice model

The post-doc will work on the project neXtWIM (funded by the Norwegian Research Council),
which has the purpose of coupling a waves-in-ice model (WIM) to the next-generation Lagrangian sea-ice model
neXtSIM that uses an elasto-brittle rheology to solve sea ice dynamics.
The post-doc will work as part of the Sea Ice Modeling group at NERSC in order to
include ice break-up due to wave action in this promising new sea ice model.
The coupled system will be used to set up a forecasting system for the Arctic.
As Arctic sea ice retreats, the wave fetch increases and so does the risk of waves entering
the ice, breaking it and possibly flipping over ice floes. This is more than ever a high safety
concern for people working in/near/on the ice, motivating the desire for a good forecasting system.
The successful candidate will have strong skills in programming in a variety of
languages (eg c, fortran) and shell scripting. Experience in parallel programming
(with GPUs and/or CPUs) would also be extremely helpful, as would a background in geophysical modeling.
Please send your application (CV, cover letter and the contacts of 2 or 3 references) by e-mail to
pierre.rampal@nersc.no, timothy.williams@nersc.no, and admin@nersc.no by the Friday 13th February 2015.
