I am writing in the hope that you will be able to help us with a nearly complete education project in Geomorphology. We are interested in contributions from faculty, graduate students and professional geomorphologists.
Would you consider writing two short (750-1000 word) case studies based on your research, joining us for a peer-review workshop at AGU for several hours on the evening of December 6, 2012, while getting paid US $250 for your time? If so, please read on and please pardon any duplicate postings.
I, along with Dave Montgomery (University of Washington) and with support from the US National Science Foundation, am leading a project to create Key Concepts in Geomorphology, a new Earth Surface Processes textbook:
The book's philosophy differs from existing texts because the entire development process has involved the wider geomorphology community. We have almost finished a compact, affordable, well illustrated textbook that is useful to students and covers all the fundamentals needed for an introductory course about Earth's Surface.
Core to the project are on-line resources, in particular, Vignettes -- short case studies. With NSF support, we are working with the community (faculty and graduate students) to build a library of several hundred of these case studies, which will live in a free, open-source archive separate from the textbook. You can see more than 170 examples by clicking on the link below:
We need the community's help to create these Vignettes and to make them as wide ranging in subject area and location as possible.
So, here are the specifics. On Thursday, December 6, from 4-8 pm at AGU, we'll be running a dinner workshop to peer-review Vignettes. Prior to the workshop (by November 11), participants will need to upload two DRAFT Vignettes via the project website. Thanks to NSF, we can pay you a US $250 honorarium for contributing two Vignettes and spending several hours with us doing peer reviews of Vignettes.
Please get back to Christine Massey (christine.massey@uvm.edu) ASAP using the attached form (or the equivalent information as listed below) if this project is of interest and we'll send along detailed instructions as well as stipend paperwork.
The form (if it did not come with this email), is also available from:
Lastly, please forward this email to others who you think could contribute Vignettes - we are interested in contributions from both faculty and graduate students (advanced MS and doctoral level) as well as post-docs and professional geomorphologists. We can accommodate up to 28 people at the workshop.
All the best,
Paul
