For people who like citations counts, Atsumu wrote the most highly cited paper (Web Science) in Journal of Glaciology 1991. He then wrote the third most highly cited paper in JoG 1992. I was the Scientific Editor (SE) on both papers. For both papers, I had to allow him massive tables that could only be printed in the specially small font that JoG keeps for its best authors.
I must have learned something from editing the great man as I myself wrote the most highly cited paper in JoG for 1995.
Those were the happy days before we had to pay to publish in JoG.

Dear Cryolist members
We are delighted to inform you the our former president Atsumu Ohmura has been awarded the 2021 IASC medal. Atsumu joined the IGS in 1974 so has been a member for 47 years continuously. He has served on several IGS committees and has been a staunch supporter of the society for decades. But most of all he is a wonderful man and a fantastic friend.
