WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF
The Research Unit Snow Avalanches and Prevention investigates the formation and dynamics of avalanches, develops warning systems for Alpine natural hazards, and issues the Swiss avalanche bulletin. For the research programme „Climate Change Impacts on Alpine Mass Movements", our research group RAMMS is looking for a
PhD Student "Debris Flow Modelling"
You will develop a debris flow model to simulate the motion of water-saturated particle flows from initiation to runout. To this end, you will study how debris flows entrain particle sediments and how these sediments are mobilized by varying amounts of precipitation. On the basis of these investigations you will use case studies and climate scenarios to quantify the future risk of debris flow inundation. You will publish your results in scientific journals and present them at international conferences.
You hold a Master's degree in Fluid dynamics, Geomechanics or Physics and have strong programming skills (C++). You are highly interested in alpine natural hazards and are familiar with geomorphological processes. A good command of English is important and knowledge of at least one national language is a benefit. Finally you operate independently, in a structured as well as efficient way and you like working within an interdisciplinary and practice oriented research environment.
