[CRYOLIST] IAG conference session

Dear all, with apologies for cross-posting,

8th IAG International Conference on Geomorphology - August 27th to 31st, 2013

We are pleased to announce the following session at the IAG meeting next year, in Paris (France): a session on Glacial and Paraglacial Geomorphology (session summary below). This integrates themes in glacial/periglacial/paraglacial processes and environments, climate change and geohazards, and so has wide relevance to many different physical settings worldwide. (For the wider context, see papers by Knight & Harrison in (2009) Sediments and future climate. Nature Geoscience, 3 (4), 230. (2009) Periglacial and Paraglacial Processes and Environments. Geological Society Special Publication 320. (2012) Evaluating the impacts of global warming on geomorphological systems. Ambio, 41 (2), 206-210.) For more information on the meeting, see the website, linked below. For more information on the session, please email me.

Abstract submission deadline 15 October 2012

Registration deadline 1 March 2013

Session S25A – GLACIAL AND PARAGLACIAL GEOMORPHOLOGY

Convenors: Jasper Knight (jasper.knight@wits.ac.za) & Stephan Harrison (stephan.harrison@exeter.ac.uk)

Glacial and paraglacial environments are sensitive to climate and environmental change over different spatial and temporal scales. The geomorphological record of such changes during the Quaternary and Holocene, preserved in formerly and presently glaciated landscapes worldwide, can be used in combination with sedimentology, dating, remote sensing and modelling studies to better understand relationships between climate forcing and landscape response, including the time scales over which paraglacial landscape relaxation take place. Understanding of forcing-response relationships also has implications for identifying, mapping and managing geohazards. This session focuses on the mapping, description, quantification and analysis of glacial and paraglacial geomorphological patterns and processes from landscapes worldwide. It has a particular focus on interdisciplinary methods of data collection and analysis, and the application to climate and environmental reconstruction. This session will be of interest to cold-climate geomorphologists, modellers, managers and those with interdisciplinary interests in environmental change.
