A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading, UK. The project is the development and assessment of a new climate sea ice model.
While sea ice knowledge is desirable, the main requirement is for someone capable of climate code development and testing, and numerical modelling and assessment of complex physical systems.
The post is available from 1 March 2020 for 18 months on a full time basis, with the potential for an extension.
This is a technical project that is primarily about model development and assessment. This project will contribute to the development and testing of the new SI3 sea ice model. This SI3 model will build upon earlier sea ice models with the aim to include the best features of these models. This post might provide an ideal entry point for a career in climate modelling and will enable the candidate to make contacts within the UK and European climate modelling communities.
You will have:
• Significant skills in numerical modelling of physical systems using complex computer codes
• Ability to modify complex computer codes with technical and physical consistency
• Ability to forensically assess, track down, and eliminate technical errors
• Ability to formulate, under guidance, new representation of physical processes in mathematical form
• Ability to interpret model simulations using understanding of the physical systems and observations, and analyse implications
• Ability to work for long periods on your own, and collaborate with colleagues within and across institutions
• Ability to write viable scientific publications
• PhD or equivalent in physical environmental science including at least one year of numerical modelling
The post holder will join an established sea ice modelling group led by Prof. Feltham within the UK Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling at the University fo Reading.
