'Inconceivable to the world' and depressing indeed !

John   (and others at CSIRO),
I would be delighted to see you working in a European institution!!
Good luck for your next steps when back on land down under... confronting "the CSIRO disaster" !
Kind regards,
-Jérôme

PS: Rosemary, Pascal, can we set up an OSTST blog for channeling messages of support to John and CSIRO staff?

Dear OSTST members

Early this year we informed you of a proposed drastic cut to the CSIRO's Ocean and Atmosphere division in Hobart, including their global sea level rise group led by John Church. Many of you joined an international petition to protest against the proposed cuts, and the OSTST science leads wrote a letter of protest to the Australian Government.

Unfortunately, to no avail.  Sydney papers announced this weekend that John Church, who is currently on a research ship in the far South Pacific, received his sacking announcement by email aboard the ship. Many other scientists and engineers and technicians at CSIRO will also be made redundant.

So, one of the world's foremost oceanographic research facilities will be largely disbanded - they have strong international support, but no support from their management.

Sorry to have to share this very depressing news...
