PhD position in ice core analysis, Glaciology Section in the Department
of Geosciences

Code: 76/G/Geo
Faculty: Science
Job type: Full time
Location: Bremerhaven

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine
Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded
by federal and state government. AWI focuses on polar and marine
research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography,
geology and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to
scientific goals.

The Glaciology Section in the Department of Geosciences in Bremerhaven
invites applications for a position addressing Dielectric Profiling of
ice cores as

PhD position in ice core analysis

Background and tasks:
Polar ice-cores are a key climate archive, providing information about
the temperature, the evolu-tion of greenhouse gases and the imprint of
past atmospheric changes such as volcanic erup¬tions of up to over the
last 800,000 years. Dielectric Profiling (DEP) data has been recorded in
several deep ice cores, like e.g. NEEM, NGRIP, TALDICE, EDML, RECAP, ABN
and further shallow cores from Greenland and Antarctica. The main goal
of the project is the interpretation of the data in a glaciological
and/or paleoclimatological context. Examples are the synchronization
between different coring sites by means of volcanic chronologies and/or
tracing of continuous radar reflectors resp. highly resolved embedding
of the core into geophysical mapping of its vicinity by a synthetic
radargram modelling approach, correlation with existing chemical proxy
records from CFA and/or IC analyses and multi-parameter dating in
conjunction with the aforementioned chemical records, to e.g.
reconstruct past snow accumulation rates. The focus of interpretation
will be defined depending on your previous scientific background and
interests. At first you will process the raw data of the listed cores by
rejecting intervals with core breaks and splintering of the core
surface, apply corrections for geometrical effects and temperature with
custom processing software, like e.g. DECOMP, and generate validated
records of density, dielectric permittivity and conductivity. This
initial task comprises the processing of large datasets with the
available code. The processing software is written in C and complemented
by csh and generic mapping tools (GMT) scripts in a UNIX/Mac OS X
environment.

Requirements:
• You must hold a Master´s degree (Diploma or equivalent)
• You should have a strong background in (geo-)physics, material
science and/or paleoclimatology, preferably with a glaciological
orientation or with transferrable disciplinary skills
• Programming skills in C, UNIX shell scripting and GMT are a
definitive plus.
• You are highly motivated to work in an interdisciplinary
international research network comprising the fields of glaciology,
geophysics, paleoclimatology and atmospheric chemistry
• Good written and oral English skills are essential.

The position is limited to 3 years. The salary will be paid in
accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD
Bund), salary level 13 (66%). The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.

For further information please contact Prof. Dr. Frank Wilhelms
(Frank.Wilhelms@awi.de).

We offer you a multi-disciplinary, international, and fascinating
professional environment with flexible working hours, state-of-the-art
research equipment, and a first-rate infrastructure.
Disabled applicants will be given preference when equal qualifications
are present. The AWI fosters the compatibility of work and family
through various means. Because of our engagement in the area of
work-life compatibility we have been awarded the certificate "Career and
Family".
As Ph.D. student at AWI you will be member of the Helmholtz Graduate
School for Polar and Marine Research 'POLMAR' (http://polmar.awi.de) or
another graduate school.

Please forward your applications with the standard documentation (letter
of motivation, a CV including copies of certificates, a publication list
if applicable, and contact information of two referees) by June 15th,
2016 referencing code 76/G/Geo to: Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar-
und Meeresforschung, Personalabteilung (human resources), Postfach 12 01
61, 27515 Bremerhaven/Germany (or by e-mail (all documents merged into
one PDF file) to: personal@awi.de.
