Funded Graduate Student Positions - Ice Characterization Field Studies for Northern Newfoundland and Labrador (Ian Turnbull and Rocky Taylor)
The Centre for Arctic Resource Development (CARD) at C-CORE, together with Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John’s, NL have initiated a project to collect and analyze data on the offshore ice environment of the province and is seeking applications from interested graduate-level students to fill one Ph.D. and multiple M.Eng. positions as part of this project. The project opens a new front in data collection, analysis, and modeling of the pack ice regime of southern and central Labrador and northern Newfoundland, beyond the coastal landfast ice. This project aims to expand the sea ice drift data collection into the more dynamic Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ) and includes detailed measurements of ice floe drift, pack convergence and divergence, and metocean forcing. Critical data gaps in the thermodynamic ice models being developed at CARD will be remedied through collection and analysis of new data during a detailed multi-year field data collection program. These data will ultimately be used in the development of improved predictive ice melt, break-up, and drift models for the Labrador coastal fast ice and MIZ, as well as the development of pack ice convergence events and associated loads during ice-ice and ice-structure interaction events. To better characterize the physical and mechanical properties of the sea ice in this region, annual on-ice field studies will be undertaken to collect temperature, salinity and other data, as well as conduct experiments to study local ice pressures, flexural strength and fracture behaviour of sea ice. The project presents an opportunity for graduate students to participate in the collection and analysis of such data, while fostering collaboration with oil and gas industry research personnel. Through training opportunities provided for students and researchers to gain experience in conducting on-ice field research, this project will enhance our understanding of our offshore ice environments, and build new capacity necessary to undertake needed field research in Newfoundland and Labrador. Selected M.Eng candidates may also be eligible to participate in a research exchange with collaborators at UNIS in Svalbard.
