It is with profound sadness that the University of East Anglia has to announce death of Prof Roland von Glasow, Professor of Atmospheric Science in the School of Environmental Sciences' Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (COAS), of which he was Director.
Prof Kevin Hiscock, in the School of Environmental Sciences, said: "We were deeply saddened to learn of Roland's unexpected death. Roland was a very supportive colleague whose warm personality made him a popular figure in the School and beyond.
"Roland joined UEA in 2007 having studied and worked at the University of Mainz and Max-Planck-Institute in Mainz, Germany, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego, and at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. Roland's research interests in atmospheric chemistry focused on reactive halogen chemistry in the troposphere, at the air-sea boundary and also in gas emissions from volcanoes. In his recent work, Roland pioneered the design and building of a sea ice chamber in the School as part of his prestigious European Research Council fellowship for the purpose of conducting controlled experimentation on halogen gas flux across the sea ice boundary.
"In all his endeavours, we shall remember Roland for his enthusiasm in communicating atmospheric sciences in his research and teaching. Roland leaves a wife, Wendy, and two young daughters to whom we extend our deepest sympathy."
