Application deadline: December 9st 2013.

UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Faculty of Science and Technology, has a PhD position vacant for applicants who wish to obtain the degree of Philosophie Doctor (PhD).

The position’s field of research/research project

The position is organized under CAGE - Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate. The appointment is for a period of four years.

Research in the Centre of excellence CAGE focuses on the role of the Arctic Ocean methane hydrates in the context of environmental and climate issues. Oceanographic data from seafloor observatory stations and “up and down” lifts will be collected along the western Svalbard margin. The candidate will analyze time series of acoustic, hydrographic and currents measurements to estimate the quantity of methane released from the seabed and identify earlier signs of these releases.

The position requires a Master’s degree in physical oceanography or relevant field. Experience in time series analyses, computing skills, and knowledge of Matlab programming would be an asset. This position will involve multiple research cruises to the Nordic seas and the Arctic Ocean, where the candidate is expected to learn a variety of field sampling techniques and novel oceanographic underwater technologies. The candidate is expected to interpret the gathered data with interdisciplinary approach interacting with sedimentary geologists, biogeochemists, biologists and paleoceanographers within and among working groups in the Centre.
